What You’ll Learn
This program includes all of German Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 – 60 hours of spoken language practice and 4 hours of reading instruction and practice. With this program you start from zero, first learning survival phrases and vocabulary, and eventually progressing to a high-intermediate level of speaking and understanding German. Every lesson contains an introductory conversation and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice of all vocabulary introduced. The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension to promote proficiency in spoken German. At the completion of this program, you’ll be speaking and understanding German with near-fluency and with impressive conversational skills.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 for each level. These lessons, which total about four hours, are designed to give you practice sounding out German and then to help you progress to reading for meaning. They also provide extensive additional vocabulary. You’ll be reading German with the ease and flexibility of a native speaker.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The German Language
German is the official language of Germany and Austria and is one of the official languages of Switzerland. It is also an official language in Belgium, Lichtenstein, and Luxembourg. Nearly 100 million people speak German as their first language: about 77 million in Germany, 8 million in Austria, and 4.5 million in Switzerland.

Tech Talk
- CDs are formatted for playing in all CD players, including car players, and users can copy files for use in iTunes or Windows Media Player.

    Comments about German Phases 1-4:

I love Pimsleur's programs. They are really excellent for self learning. I am using them for 3 different languages and honestly no other program could help me the way these programs do.

I strongly recommend Dr. Pimsleur's programs to everyone for language learning.

    Thanks

    Comments about German Phases 1-4:

I've taken three semesters of German at a top 50 university and found the Pimsleur course vastly more helpful and practical. It teaches you the kind of language you would use everyday (I would know; I used it for a six week trip to Germany). Just finished the fourth set of lessons. I hope they come out with a fifth set soon.

      Comments about German Phases 1-4:

I'm about halfway through Phase 1. I'm enjoying it and learning enough German to be well prepared for when my wife and I travel to Germany next summer. I highly recommend Pimsleur.

      Complete surprise: partner is speaking

      Comments about German Phases 1-4:

My partner plays one German lesson per day via ITunes on IPhone, while doing yard work. The night before, he loads the next-day lesson, so the morning sequence is fairly painless. To my complete surprise, he is making steady progress and coming out with increasingly useful German sentences day by day. He has completed about 35 lessons.
What he complains about is when there are discrepancies in how the speakers pronounce things. He finds the 4th speaker who arrived near the beginning of Level 2 to be particularly difficult to understand. The main issue is that discrepancies such as "ish" versus "ick" for "ich" are not explained fully as regional preferences. The endings on words, both verbs and nouns, are also often misunderstood (in terms of being able to hear with that right answer is on the audio). For this reason, I have supplemented our lives with a free app LEO and use that to look up the grammar when I am not certain of the answers for him.
I do not think that a person isolated from a real German speaker would learn as effectively as a student who can ask questions along the way.
My partner plays guitar and has spent decades picking up music by ear. I have no doubt that this explains his ability (and annoyance) with close attention to the people speaking German on the recordings.
It does seem that the progression of knowledge is a good one, although one could argue whether it is necessary to learn how to order wine so early in the sequence.
We speak a little German every day at home now, and he is reading a Charlie Brown comic book as a way of learning some slang and phrases that any child might know. Without this reinforcement from extra sources, progress would be much slower.
So yes, the training is very valuable, and I would recommend that any serious student find a way to engage with a live native speaker and some enjoyable children's books.
