What You’ll Learn
Builds upon skills taught in Pimsleur’s German Level 1.

In the first 10 lessons you’ll begin using the past tense. Structures become more complex and informal speech is introduced. Soon you’ll take part in conversations about ordering meals, shopping, and local tourist attractions. As you progress, your fluency will increase as your vocabulary expands.

The next 10 lessons will allow you to further combine and build upon known elements, and produce longer and more complex sentences. You’ll be discussing business and social activities, expressing your interests, and talking about the weather.

In the final 10 lessons you’ll double your vocabulary and have several hundred structures to draw upon. You’ll learn to express yourself with relative structures – faster, slower, etc. You’ll be able to ask for assistance in many situations and to ask for directions to various locations. You’ll explore sports and leisure activities, manage changing money and banking, and discuss travel plans. By the end of the program, you’ll be speaking at a mid-intermediate level with near-native pronunciation, and you’ll be comfortable meeting most social demands and limited job requirements.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Lesson 30. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to give you practice reading German, and to provide you with some insight into German culture with proverbs, common expressions, and a broad look at things you’ll experience when visiting a German-speaking country.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The German Language
German is the official language of Germany and Austria and is one of the official languages of Switzerland. It is also an official language in Belgium, Lichtenstein, and Luxembourg. Nearly 100 million people speak German as their first language: about 77 million in Germany, 8 million in Austria, and 4.5 million in Switzerland.

I am having very good sucess with the program so far. I have completed Level 1 and a third of Level 2. The introduction of informal conversation with Du is difficult at first. I am trying not to be critical of that at this point because the program has really made it "easy" for me to pick up German and Pimsleur seems to be dead on with his research. I'd rather personal rather focus on the formal version and then add less formal conversation later. I am able to retain what I have learned. I listen to a new lesson everyday and listen again while I am out walking. I like the portability and that I can focus just on the words and pronunciation. One thing I don't like in the MP3 version is the sound isn't very good. I have it all the way up and it is still hard to hear on the computer. I am impressed with the product. Pimsleur's research has really paid off.
Sometimes I have to slow things down a bit and spend two days on a lesson. Occassionally there is a lesson that introduces a ton of new material and it seems very overwhelming at first. After a second listen and sometimes a third it is much easier to move on with confidence. I've grown accustom to the speakers voice. Toward the end of the first unit, one of the guys dropped out and I found myself missing him because I was so use to his voice. This other guy is more soft spoken. I am looking forward to finishing all the German units and becoming proficient in German. so far this program has given me the confidence to have such a lofty goal. Thanks.

From my local library, I got this on CDs. The sound quality is quite poor compared to German Complete Level I. It sounds like a bad transfer from old audiocassettes, with moderate tape hiss and low signal to noise ratio. The CDs say ©1995-1998.

Is that the version being sold now? If not, why not tell us what you sell now?

Comments about Pimsleur German Level 2 CD:

I have used a number of language training programs as an adult. When I decided to become serious about learning Germany, I picked up a copy of Level 1. It was the best formula for learning a different language that I have experienced. It seems fast initially. You hear it and you repeat. It advances to the next but somehow you don't feel ready. I lacked confidence for being ready for Lesson 2. Then Lesson 2 reverts to the earlier phrases and you are surprised at how well you can speak and answer the questions, in German. The next lesson seems more difficult at the beginning. Again, it reverts to the conversation from the earlier lessons, you have less trouble. All along the lessons, you hear new phrases and information and then return to familiar conversation that you thought was difficult, yesterday. When I completed Level 1, I ordered 2 and 3. I am moving through 2 at this time. I'm surprised at the confidence I have in talking in the community, now. Additionally, unlike some programs I've tried, this one hasn't taken me into a Post Office to send a registered letter to Iceland, or put me in other situations that I probably wouldn't engage in my first time at bat in a foreign country. It's been a natural develop of skills. You begin with a simple conversation with a friend. You progress in the conversation with a work colleague. You discuss friends and visiting cities. I am thoroughly enjoying my drive to and from work, and as I spend the weekend touring the Black Forest. My only complaint. I wish there was a script book for each lesson, and not just a vocabulary book.

Comments about Pimsleur German Level 2 MP3:

I've used Pimsleur to brush up on my French and Italian for business and personal travel. Pimsleur was able to get me quickly and confidently to the basic level in both languages so I could confidently take care of everyday essential tasks like asking for directions, making purchases in stores, ordering meals in restaurants, registering at the hotel and having conversations with people I met along the way. It really enriches the travel experience and lets you develop insights into the culture. I'm now getting ready for a trip to Germany and by doubling up to two lessons a day my goal is to complete all four levels and reach intermediate fluency within 90 days.

I've explored other language learning opportunities including some Internet-based systems with lots of "bells and whistles" but Pimsleur is my top choice because of the audio format. Videos and other visual content may be fun or interesting, but there are two big drawbacks. First, it requires that you sit and look at a computer screen while you learn, and that eliminates study while walking, running, or driving. My primary study time is during my morning and evening commute, which I can do easily with Pinsleur which includes quick (under five minutes) reading lessons which I can print out on a single sheet of paper and discreetly tuck in my pocket (or delivered to my smart phone). The second drawback to computer based visual language learning systems is that language is not a visual communication system, it's verbal and audible. So developing your "ear" is the essential skill and that is exactly what Pimsleur does.

Comments about Pimsleur German Level 2 MP3:

But does it have to be so UScentric borne out in absolutely silly interpretations such as the claim "Hallo" means "Hi" and "Guten Tag" means "Hello". Hellloooo! "Hallo" means "Hello" and "Guten Tag" means "Good Day" a greeting used in the rest of the English speaking world if not in the US. And drop the telephones and telephone books, and odd comment when the man prefer emails in the same unit. I'm also amazed that the feminists haven't tackled you over the vapid roles the women play in some units. And finally the younger man's voice is singularly irritating. However, I'm having more success than ever before in decades of half baked attempts to learn a language. But it would be worth your encouraging students to do all units several times on the alotted day and while doing PG2 I've been going back to the corresponding PG1 Unit for a very beneficial run through..

        Service and delivery comments:

Good for PG1, not for PG2 due to some S&S system bugs but they appear to have been fixed as had no trouble downloading PG3

Comments about Pimsleur German Level 2 MP3:

Disclaimer: I studied Spanish years ago; I have some limited experience learning a new language.

I listen to a lesson every day on my way to work and do the reading exercises when I get home. I'm currently on the second phase. You'll find that if you do the lessons consistently, things will start clicking. The lessons can be difficult; don't be surprised if you have to repeat one two or three times before you feel comfortable moving on. While I would not be able to have a "normal" conversation with a native speaker at this point, I could perform very basic interactions. Learning a language is hard and takes time. If you go into this knowing that, you'll be very satisfied. If you expect to be comprehending fluent German in a few months, this isn't the best solution for you.

The lessons cover the basics including greetings, times, numbers, days of the week, and transportation. The format is very polite and formal; you won't learn slang and may come across a bit stiff to a native speaker.

The speakers are very clear and include a few different accents for variety. The lessons are a bit dry, so I prefer to do them while I'm driving.

I listen to Pimsleur in the car - would never get around to it if I had to sit and do it at home on a computer, but this is a great way for me to learn to speak a language!
