Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction (16 hours) as MP3 download, plus PDF user's guide and reading booklet

German is the official language of Germany and Austria and is one of the official languages of Switzerland, Belgium, Lichtenstein, and Luxembourg. Nearly 100 million people speak German as their first language: about 77 million in Germany, 8 million in Austria, and 4.5 million in Switzerland.
The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! German Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with nearnative pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons begin in Unit 10 and provide you with an introduction to reading German. These readings, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Comments about German Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I use the lessons from my phone and listen to them on the way to and from work. I like how previous lessons are integrated into new ones so that you don't lose what you've learned. I also like the practical nature of the conversations - something I will use as soon as I hit Germany!

Comments about German Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I use it daily. I like it a lot. The reading lessons should correspond to some of the conversations and phrases. Some of the words tat are difficult should be included in the lesson to check spelling and in the dictionary. Example: Beschitigt is for visining city or a place and Kindern which is difficult to understand to check the dictionary.

The program is very useful to learn to frame sentences and asking questions.

Thanks,

Lou

Service and delivery comments:

Improve reading lessons and use sentences in the conversation. It will be helpful to refer to the dictionary and verbs and grammar to understand Cases and tenses.
You also give an option to slow down the conversation.
I supplement this software with Fluenz and Babble.

Comments about German I, Comprehensive:

I already taught myself Portuguese and Itialian on my own. I tried German a few years ago, but lost interest. With the Pimsleur Method of just listening to the lessons, you automatically will be spreaking in German right away.
Injust half an hour a day, and after 10 CDs, (32 per pack, I can speak about 50 simple sentences in German, and respond to about 30 or so questions IN GERMAN! WOW! I have never kearned a language this fast before!
I look forward to my lesson the next day!

Comments about German Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Learning for travel, the only issue is the reading material doesn't sync with the audio chapters. Also the speaker introduces some new words without an explanation of the definition. I have to cross reference another translation program to make the complete translation. However I will purchase the next set of chapters.

All in all it's a great educational program.

Comments about German Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I'm loving how the program distributes practice of previously learned items over time.

Also, rather than memorizing rote items (vocabulary, numbers, letters, etc) I began using these items in conversational contexts right away.

I have a PhD in Instructional Design and this approach to language learning is an excellent example of effective instruction. Definitely worth the money. Wish I had purchased this program four years ago to use during my commutes to and from work.

The short amount of response time requires me to think on my feet, but sometimes it arrives a little too fast!

My only concern is the app - it's slow to respond to play/pause touches and other navigation. It also deletes the lessons without me knowing and I have to re-download before I can begin a new lesson. Strange.
