What You’ll Learn
This program includes all of French Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 – 60 hours of spoken language practice and 4 hours of reading instruction and practice. With this program you start from zero, first learning survival phrases and vocabulary, and eventually progressing to a high-intermediate level of speaking and understanding French. Every lesson contains an introductory conversation and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice of all vocabulary introduced. The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension to promote proficiency in spoken French. At the completion of this program, you’ll be speaking and understanding French with near-fluency and with impressive conversational skills.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 for each level. These lessons, which total about four hours, are designed to give you practice sounding out French and then to help you progress to reading for meaning. They also provide extensive additional vocabulary. You’ll be reading French with the ease and flexibility of a native speaker.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The French Language
French is spoken by 55 million speakers in France, 3 million in Belgium, 1.5 million in Switzerland, 6.5 million in Canada, and 5 million in former French and Belgian colonies. It is an official language in 44 countries and an official language of the United Nations. An estimated 50 million people around the world speak French as a second language.

Tech Talk
- CDs are formatted for playing in all CD players, including car players, and users can copy files for use in iTunes or Windows Media Player.

      Comments about French Phases 1-4:

A most wonderful addition to my classes at the Alliance Francaise, particularly for someone trying to learn French at "un certain age," never ever having studied French before. I try to do a lesson daily and particularly enjoy them when I'm walking in the park. The lessons improve my pronounciation, reinforce grammar and greatly help with my conversational skills. This is my third time listening to level 4, so I'm thrilled to know that there will soon be a level 5 available. I just hope that other levels will continue to be developed after the 5.

        Comments about French Phases 1-4:

I've worked with Pimsleur's French course from Phase I through Phase IV. I travel to France each year, and my ability to communicate in French and my ease with the language have dramatically improved each year because of Pimsleur. Even outside of Paris in places where they often speak no English, I've been complimented on my French. I'm looking forward to the next installment of the course.

        Comments about French Phases 1-4:

During my work outs at the gym, drinking coffee at the coffee shop, driving, waiting in line, walking in the park are places I take advantage of listening to product approach to learning French.

Hear the words spoken by a native speaker and repeat it is the easiest way for a practical approach when learning French. French words are broken down and pronounced clearly, which increase the ease in understanding French words. The meaning is given in the scenario in English prior to hearing the French dialogue.

I would love to have a spoken glossary where the most useful vocabularies are used in french along with the conjugations. The real life scenarios are fun to learn and practice. Learning the words we use regularly would enhance the product approach more effectively.

Reading and writing program is expensively costly for students and for the general use. I wish the cost for the total approach would be far less expensive.

        Service and delivery comments:

I would suggest an addition to the listening portion where the most useful French words are use to be included in a separate section. Perhaps the 2000 most useful French words along with the conjugations and used in a sentence would build a further interest in learning French from Pimsleur.
This method of learning another language works well and is far easier when one is not tied down to a laptop. The empowerment of this approach is the freedom it offers when learning a language while on the go. I wish a section was included that has much more verbs that are commonly used.
        Sincerely,
        Peter The Fisherman

          Comments about French Phases 1-4:

I have completed unit 1 and am starting unit 2. I did take French in high school and college but did not remember much beyond the typical 'bonjour' and 'comment vas-tu'.

I generally use the product while driving to work as I can practice repeating out loud while driving. I've tried both free and paid language learning products and while Pimsleur is somewhat 'old school' (no fancy apps here) I believe it works.

              Comments about French Phases 1-4:

I have had the product about a month and just finished Lesson 22. I already have a background in French - some high school courses and other experience. So I know a lot of the vocabulary when it is introduced in the lessons. The biggest thing Pimsleur helps me with is pronunciation. Those "r"'s are still tough for me sometimes! It also helps with grammar a lot. I like the English explanations of some of it, but they also repeat various phrases to highlight differences in context. The reading lessons are great too, especially since I am more of a visual learner usually and seeing the words helps me remember them. However, I do wish that the vocabulary covered in the main lesson was then incorporated into the corresponding reading lesson to reinforce and visualize new words. Overall, I would recommend to anyone, but especially to people who might already have some background in French and just want to learn, or relearn, how to speak!
