What You’ll Learn
This French program includes all of Pimsleur’s French Levels 1 & 2. With this program you start from zero, first learning survival phrases and vocabulary, and eventually progressing to a mid-intermediate level of speaking, understanding, and reading French.

Every lesson contains an introductory conversation, and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice for all vocabulary introduced. Emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension. At the completion of this course, you’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future; you’ll speak confidently using your wide-ranging vocabulary, and experience the French language and culture with a deepening insight.

Reading Lessons are included to provide you with an introduction to reading French. These lessons, which total about one hour for each level, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The French Language
French is spoken by 55 million speakers in France, 3 million in Belgium, 1.5 million in Switzerland, 6.5 million in Canada, and 5 million in former French and Belgian colonies. It is an official language in 44 countries and an official language of the United Nations. An estimated 50 million people around the world speak French as a second language.

Comments about Pimsleur French Levels 1-2 MP3:

Some background first: I studied French in school and generally kept an A grade (at least in French!) - I just was never fluent. My intention when I bought the course was to become fluent, and I have to say, not only am I enjoying it very much but I am actually getting fluent! That said, I have to add that I cannot imagine what others who may not have such a strong foundation would do!?!?!? In other words, I like the pace at which the course moves, but if I was learning a language that I did not already have a solid grammar and spelling base to work from, I think I'd be in trouble....

    Service and delivery comments:

No issues at all with delivery. There was one instance of an issue with the app where it wouldn't play. But your Customer Support suggested that I log out and back in again (I gather I was not the first customer to complain of this issue). Somewhat inconvenient, but no big deal.

Comments about Pimsleur French Levels 1-2 MP3:

I like how each lesson starts with a review and then adds new words. I'm only on Level 1 thus far, but am struggling with the grammar and masculine/feminine words. I wish there was a better written component to learn how to conjugate the verbs and see what is fem./masc.

Comments about Pimsleur French Levels 1-2 MP3:

I have been using Pimsleur French in the way it was recommended. That is, I do one lesson per day along with the MP3 reading lesson. I just completed lesson 26.

Because I have been studying french using various methods for the last 4 years what I am missing is the conversation aspect of learning the language which is difficult to get without a tutor or immersion. I have done both of those as well as adult learning classes and self paced classes on-line. I still have trouble understanding what is being said and trouble putting together sentences in response.

What I like about Pimsleur is it forces me to listen intently because there is nothing to read or look at so it has helped in my comprehension and retention. Also, it has helped me in constructing sentences because I better remember what I've heard and the repetition that is done helps a lot.

If I hadn't had all the previous knowledge of verb conjugation and vocabulary I would not have liked this product at all. I think if you don't have any knowledge of french this is not the product to learn. I think this is a product for advanced french learning.

Comments about Pimsleur French Levels 1-2 MP3:

First of all: Pimsleur lessons do a stunning job of teaching pronunciation, explaining meaning, dosing it out in do-able portions, and reviewing the complicated and important things.

It helps you become fluent in what I'd call "sentence portions" (as opposed to individual words) and to rearrange these portions to get fundamental sentences and meanings. It focuses on hard issues for us native english speakers, such as pronunciations, and explains usage in terms of cultural norms as well.

Having taught english a bit as a hobby, I was giggling through the entire first lesson or two - just at how fabulously clever it was.

I first decided to get Pimsleur because I needed to improve my spanish at work. Pimsleur was a last ditch -and very successful- effort before resorting to traveling to a language school abroad.

While I'd had "halting" beginner type spanish before, Pimsleur helped get me Over The Conversational Hump, to be able to actually have a full conversation with someone in Spanish.

Advice: listen from the first lesson, even if you know almost all of it - you'll probably get a little something clarified that you hadn't had straight before - and the more sound your basics are, the better.

To me, Spanish levels I - III are Indispensable. Level IV was more vocabulary building, and less of what was critical to my getting the language.

I got French I & II earlier this year, knowing Nothing of French. Although I think its much more difficult to speak than Spanish, at lesson 16, other French students are already complimenting my accent.

Advice: I listen to each lesson 2 to 4 times, not rushing myself. Sometimes I listen to a few lessons in a row, then go back and review those consecutively - so as not to listen to the same 30 minutes repeatedly. When it seems very hard, I just listen anyway and don't stress about it. By listening to it a few times over, I can't help but to understand and "get" it. I get about 90% or better before moving on, which works for me.

I totally recommend Pimsleur as a first step to the language (or a 2nd or 3rd step...) I am also supplementing Pimsleur French with another (online) French course which emphasizes listening, grammar and basic expressions. The two together are amazing (if you have the time). Between the two, I recommend doing Pimsleur FIRST.

I've enjoyed Pimsleur so much that I've been wanting to write this review for awhile. Hope you enjoy it too!

I listen to Pimsleur in the car - would never get around to it if I had to sit and do it at home on a computer, but this is a great way for me to learn to speak a language!
