What You’ll Learn
Builds upon skills taught in Pimsleur’s French Levels 1-3. You’ll be speaking and understanding French with near-fluency and with a broad range of conversational skills. In Level 4 the pace and conversation moves more rapidly, accelerating exposure to new vocabulary and structures, and approaching native speed and comprehension.

You’ll learn to speak about your professional and personal life, needs, likes and dislikes, and to create complex sentences discussing the past, present, future, conditional and subjunctive.

A few of the topics included in French Level 4:
-Business: Traveling for business, attending a conference, booking and canceling train tickets, looking for and buying a house in France.
-Personal life: Discussing where you’ve lived, what you enjoy, going through hard times, marriage and divorce, raising teenagers, missing loved ones, moving.
-Activities: Reading, hiking, gardening, skiing, going to the theater, watching TV, walking around, doing home renovations.
-Shopping: trying on and buying various items of clothing, asking for colors and sizes, buying gifts and souvenirs, going to the open-air and the flea market, haggling over prices, negotiating a discount, discussing shipping options.
-Vacationing: going to the beach or swimming pool, sampling foods, preparing a picnic, boating, dealing with crowds.
-Dealing with Unforeseen Events: feeling ill, calling a doctor, losing or forgetting personal items, being caught in a strike, witnessing a crime, falling in love.
-The French Character: Learn to think like a French person, using irony and sarcasm, making huffing sounds, showing nonchalance and disinterest, and expressing nostalgia and fatalism.

After Lesson 30, a short story broken down into 20 manageable segments (over one hour) is provided for practice reading French.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The French Language
French is spoken by 55 million speakers in France, 3 million in Belgium, 1.5 million in Switzerland, 6.5 million in Canada, and 5 million in former French and Belgian colonies. It is an official language in 44 countries and an official language of the United Nations. An estimated 50 million people around the world speak French as a second language.

If you want to speak French, you need Phase 4. Phase 4 is not only a good vocabulary builder, it helps you with sentence structure, grammar, idiomatic expressions and even emotions. The pace is quicker than Phase 3 but not so quick that you can't keep up with it. I'm at Unit 20 right now, which I think is so far the most critical lesson of the set. In Lesson 20 you develop a comfort level with the passé compose and reflexive verbs; I really can't see any other method going into this level of detail on one of the most basic and important foundations of the French language. You may not move as quickly through the units in Phase 4, I've played Unit 20 four or five times so far in the past 2 days, but you will build your confidence and ability to speak. Like one of the other reviewers, I just wish there was a Phase 5.

The lessons are very good. Level 4 proceeds more quickly than the others and offers more challenge and more colloquial French. Unfortunately, the MP3 download to my computer is more difficult to hear, and that makes it harder to learn. I reported the problem, and someone from Pimsleur did call me about it, and was going to look into it further, but so far I have not heard from them. I use the lessons on my ipod, and I can control the sound on that but not instant replay. I prefer the computer so that I can stop the lesson and repeat something until I get it right.

Comments about French Phase 4, Units 1-30:

I've learned several languages and I use Pimsleur to practice speaking. The nice thing about it is that I can pick up at the level where I think I am and not have to start with Phase I. I just did that with Russian III, having been taught by the Army over 40 years ago. It's amazing what I remember and could understand, and seems to be the right place for me to start improving those latent skills.

Comments about French Phase 4, Units 1-30:

I've only gotten through the first 5 lessons, but it seems to be very effectively building on the foundation of the first 3 phases by adding more advanced vocabulary and tense usage in increasingly complex sentences. The Pimsleur method works well for my particular situation, which is wanting to learn the language for no particular reason and no opportunity for total immersion. I mainly listen to the lessons on my daily 40 minute commute to work. As far as shortcomings, the only thing I can think of is it's not clear what my expected proficiency level should be if I can accurately repeat back all of the sentences in the package. Having completed four phases, should that mean (for example) I'd be comfortable starting a conversation with a French person I met in an airport? Should I be able to listen to a movie in French and understand most of it? Right now I can understand pieces of them, but more often than not I cant keep up with the conversations, especially if they are talking fast.

      Comments about French IV, Comprehensive:

I will write a review as soon as I've ad time to begin the 4th course. I am consumed with a recent flood which has turned the house and my life topsy turvy. Contact me a month from now and I'm sure to give a good review since I've enjoyed the other three courses. Claire M. Sloan

Comments about French Phase 4, Units 1-30:

I really like the Pimsleur French courses. They do a great job of teaching how and what to say as the French actually speak. Plus they spend a good amount of each lesson on pronunciation, an essential element of speaking another language properly. I have found it interesting that I actually speak the language as well if not better than my daughter who has had four years of high school French. That's because so much of her study was spent on writing, reading, and grammar. Those are all important concepts however to just speak the language and be functional does not require those disciplines at the outset. I like the length of each lesson (30 minutes). Doing one a day works well but don't think you can do a lesson one time and have it mastered. I have found doing a lesson a couple of times is more beneficial and sometimes it is necessary to stop the lesson for more time to formulate your response. Overall, and for the price, I have found learning French through Pimsleur to be enjoyable as well as rewarding. I set out just to learn the basics but am now inspired to really learn the language to the best of my ability. I am only sorry I did not attempt this years ago.

      Service and delivery comments:

One criticism I have of the courses is the text. I wish the booklets contained the transcriptions of each lesson. While parts of the lesson concepts are captured in the reading sections of the booklet, a complete transcription would aid in thoroughly learning the language. I have actually transcribed most of the lessons myself. However, without a teacher to ask questions of, I cannot be sure my work is completely accurate. I find that transcribing aids in speaking the language better. Also for beginners, the French instructor (not the male or female speakers) on some of the courses is very difficult to understand. I understand that it is to the student's benefit to hear the language spoken and to begin to recognize and think in the language, a very critical aspect of learning a new language. However, a bit slower would be a bit more beneficial. Overall the course works and I would recommend Pimsleur courses to others.
