What You’ll Learn
Builds upon skills taught in Pimsleur’s French Levels 1-3. You’ll be speaking and understanding French with near-fluency and with a broad range of conversational skills. In Level 4 the pace and conversation moves more rapidly, accelerating exposure to new vocabulary and structures, and approaching native speed and comprehension.

You’ll learn to speak about your professional and personal life, needs, likes and dislikes, and to create complex sentences discussing the past, present, future, conditional and subjunctive.

A few of the topics included in French Level 4:
-Business: Traveling for business, attending a conference, booking and canceling train tickets, looking for and buying a house in France.
-Personal life: Discussing where you’ve lived, what you enjoy, going through hard times, marriage and divorce, raising teenagers, missing loved ones, moving.
-Activities: Reading, hiking, gardening, skiing, going to the theater, watching TV, walking around, doing home renovations.
-Shopping: trying on and buying various items of clothing, asking for colors and sizes, buying gifts and souvenirs, going to the open-air and the flea market, haggling over prices, negotiating a discount, discussing shipping options.
-Vacationing: going to the beach or swimming pool, sampling foods, preparing a picnic, boating, dealing with crowds.
-Dealing with Unforeseen Events: feeling ill, calling a doctor, losing or forgetting personal items, being caught in a strike, witnessing a crime, falling in love.
-The French Character: Learn to think like a French person, using irony and sarcasm, making huffing sounds, showing nonchalance and disinterest, and expressing nostalgia and fatalism.

After Lesson 30, a short story broken down into 20 manageable segments (over one hour) is provided for practice reading French.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The French Language
French is spoken by 55 million speakers in France, 3 million in Belgium, 1.5 million in Switzerland, 6.5 million in Canada, and 5 million in former French and Belgian colonies. It is an official language in 44 countries and an official language of the United Nations. An estimated 50 million people around the world speak French as a second language.

If you want to speak French, you need Phase 4. Phase 4 is not only a good vocabulary builder, it helps you with sentence structure, grammar, idiomatic expressions and even emotions. The pace is quicker than Phase 3 but not so quick that you can't keep up with it. I'm at Unit 20 right now, which I think is so far the most critical lesson of the set. In Lesson 20 you develop a comfort level with the passé compose and reflexive verbs; I really can't see any other method going into this level of detail on one of the most basic and important foundations of the French language. You may not move as quickly through the units in Phase 4, I've played Unit 20 four or five times so far in the past 2 days, but you will build your confidence and ability to speak. Like one of the other reviewers, I just wish there was a Phase 5.

The lessons are very good. Level 4 proceeds more quickly than the others and offers more challenge and more colloquial French. Unfortunately, the MP3 download to my computer is more difficult to hear, and that makes it harder to learn. I reported the problem, and someone from Pimsleur did call me about it, and was going to look into it further, but so far I have not heard from them. I use the lessons on my ipod, and I can control the sound on that but not instant replay. I prefer the computer so that I can stop the lesson and repeat something until I get it right.

Comments about Pimsleur French Level 4 MP3:

Pimsleur programs are excellent if you are willing to work hard every day. I have used the disc and direct-download versions, and much prefer the latter. When I complete Level 5, I would wish there were more levels to study.

Comments about Pimsleur French Level 4 MP3:

This is the best way to learn French. I've been listening to Pimsleur French lessons since December of 2014, and I'm already speaking (and writing) a good deal with some of my close friends who are from French speaking countries. Do yourself a favor and purchase the French Pimsleur package - it'll be the best decision you ever make!!

Comments about Pimsleur French Level 4 MP3:

I was introduced to Pimsleur via a 5 lesson gift from my daughter. I was pleased enough to buy all 30 lessons of French I. Over the past year I've gone back again and again. Now I am working through French IV, and feeling really great about it all. I listen and practice while I walk my dog, and I so the same-hands free - while I drive. I've tried other popular free and paid for programs and none serves me as well as Pimsleur's program.
My efforts to learn French are powered by a planned two week trip to France this fall. I am a garage wine maker and I plan to converse with the French wine makers in their language to the greatest extent I can.

My progress in the language has motivated me to subscribe to a French language TV station, and I've joined a club for French speakers-both novice and native and everything in between.

Now that I am level four I do wish they would provide a longer lag between challange to speak French and their excellent solutions--I need to pressure to produce, so getting answers too quickly in less than ideal. I'd also like a bit m ore rapid pace of presenting new vocabulary.

I do a lot of reveiw. In fact I am just n ow finishing a hop-scotch of every other lesson from French I through to French IV, lesson 7 where I am now.

It remains for me to master the language as spoken more quickly as native speakers do. Maybe French V offers these things, but by the time I am ready for French V, it will be departure time for my trip to France--learning and practice will be over.

A prior experience in Germany taught me that after a day or two of immersion language proficiency will advance swiftly.

I credit Pimsleur with creating a truely workable language learning platform. It does what they say if will, and it does that in the way they say it will.

They have not made a promise, but I have begun tod ream in French-first it was all French sounding gibberish, but more and more I am understanding the conternt of the dreams. I also find myself silently translating the English instruction/scene setting bits of the tapes into French. And so far as the French Tv goes, I am pretty well able to catch the drift of what is going on--nuance still eludes me. My challenge now is to gain real mastery of verbs and their tenses.

gvie the free lesson a try, or better yet risk a few dollars on five lessons. You will be glad you did. The rpcie is fair and the product is excellent.

Comments about Pimsleur French Level 4 MP3:

I moved to Porterville 25 years ago and could not speak any Spanish except the few phrases everyone knows. I was also building a chiropractic practice. I decided to try Pimsleur. I listened to one old lesson and one new lesson daily for 90 days. I have never needed an interpreter since. I was thrilled to see Pimsleur produced volumes 4 and 5 and have been listening to them for the last several months. My patients think I konw more than I do because my accent is to so good. I credit that with the program.

The program is inaudible on blutooth device in car with excellent sound system. Contacted Pimsleur customer service, was initially told the program was designed to be used with headphones or external speakers. Eventually they acknowledged that many people now use mobile devices and they are working on a fix, with no presently anticipated release date. Pimsleur refused to refund.
