The best part is that it doesn’t have to be difficult or take years to master. Thirty minutes a day is all it takes, and we get you speaking right from the first day. Pimsleur courses use a scientifically-proven method that puts you in control of your learning. What You’ll Learn
Builds upon skills taught in Pimsleur’s French Level 1.

In the first 10 lessons you’ll begin using the past tense. Structures become more complex and informal speech is introduced. Soon you’ll take part in conversations about ordering meals, shopping, and local tourist attractions. As you progress, your fluency will increase as your vocabulary expands.

The next 10 lessons will allow you to further combine and build upon known elements, and produce longer and more complex sentences. You’ll be discussing business and social activities, expressing your interests, and talking about the weather.

In the final 10 lessons you’ll double your vocabulary and have several hundred structures to draw upon. You’ll learn to express yourself with relative structures – faster, slower, etc. You’ll be able to ask for assistance in many situations and to ask for directions to various locations. You’ll explore sports and leisure activities, manage changing money and banking, and discuss travel plans. By the end of the program, you’ll be speaking at a mid-intermediate level with near-native pronunciation, and you’ll be comfortable meeting most social demands and limited job requirements.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Lesson 30. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to give you practice reading French, and to provide you with some insight into French culture with proverbs, common expressions, and a broad look at things you’ll experience when visiting a French-speaking country.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The French Language
French is spoken by 55 million speakers in France, 3 million in Belgium, 1.5 million in Switzerland, 6.5 million in Canada, and 5 million in former French and Belgian colonies. It is an official language in 44 countries and an official language of the United Nations. An estimated 50 million people around the world speak French as a second language.

I work in a factory. I got tired of the same music over and over, I had wanted to learn another language for years (tried Spanish years ago, lost interest), and I always have ear-phones in my ears. So on a whim (and after I read War and Peace, and some of the non-translated French parts made me feel stupid), I bought Pimsleur's "Coversational French" in a box, which had the first 15 units in it. Now, lets be honest people, the first 15 units will NOT, in ANY WAY, constitute enough knowledge to allow you to have "a conversation". I've just finished Phase 2, and *MAYBE* I *might just* be able to deliver a glimmer of a conversation. For a few minutes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm *loving* my Pimsleur French lessons. No one else I know thinks its cool, but I do. As I did with Phase 1, I'll soon Re-Do Phase 2, there are always things that you lose/forget/didn't-pick-up-the-first-time-through (and I want to get my money's worth, its not cheap). I WILL buy Phase 3, when that's done. And eventually Phase 4, though I worry that they'll never do more than Phase 4, so I've wasted my energy and money... Because, since Pimsleur is my only way to learn, where do I go next??

Faults? Though I love to read, I haven't given any time to the reading lessons, my personal goal is to learn a language while I work. As such, there have been times where I *thought* I was speaking the words/phrases correctly, but when I Google Translated them, I had them completely wrong! Earplugs, loud factory, I'm busy, etc., I didn't always catch the "proper" pronunciation. Having done this nearly everyday for almost the past year, I find I can adapt quite easily, once I realize my errors. Often, the earlier Lessons you learned get changed completely anyway, so as you go with Pimsleur you *HAVE* to adapt. Its not hard, they coddle you along.

The reality, though, is that these recordings/lessons are only a start. Not to say that they're not useful, they ABSOLUTELY are, but interacting with a "real" person, or even just a movie that doesn't know the repetitious Pimsleur Phrases, it becomes obvious that one will have to do "MORE" to really grasp the language. BUT, they're giving you many basic, every-day words and phrases, and are teaching you how to form your own basic phrases that are fairly common. My personal guess is, if I were dropped in Paris one day out of the blue, I might not be able to catch much of what the natives would say to me, but I could *quite probably* make my needs known, and get results, albeit slowly. Which is *Worlds Away* from where I started, not quite a year ago!!

Its very much like the old Karate Kid movie, "Paint the Fence, Wax the Car", mindless monotonous repetition (Factory work, anyone?). You simply listen and repeat the phrases over and over, and eventually you will reach a "zen" point where, when asked THAT particular question, you WILL automatically repeat the appropriate phrase, maybe without even knowing! What eventually happens, is that Pimsleur starts showing you how to DE-configure the phrases, and re-translate anything you want with the new words they've taught you. And since they've already programmed basic grammer into you, you can (ideally) start to make your own sentences...! Have you ever met a foreigner that *doesn't quite* speak correctly, but you can figure it out, with effort, what he wants to say? That's ME! That's awesome!!!

Over the course of using this series, I've also watched a baby grow and start to learn to speak english, which reminds me of Pimsleur's thing about how children learn language. I saw the child recently, and her grasp of the language (or at least the mindless phrases we spurt out in appropriate situations) has grown probably in a similar ratio to my own French understandings over several years. Neither of us could hold a political discussion, for instance, but both of us could get our needs met, which is incredible, considering our previous states. When she said "Thankyou" for me opening a door that she was too little to open, it sounded as "real" as it probably would for the average "French person", when I said "Thank you" (in their language) for them holding a door open for me.

I Kind of wish they'd add some "fundamental" stuff. Like, I *KNOW* I'm not ready with French numbers, especially how they do math in their translations! I would LOVE to see some kind of basic number "Flash card" tracks, where I could test myself. I would also say that while I DO know my weekdays, months are still missing mostly (though those will get covered in later lessons, I know). A track focusing on Months, and frankly lots of other stuff, could possibly make it easier for a user to jump into the future NEW pimsleur products, (as they already know basic stuff, just like a toddler would have learned, so they could more easily jump into a further French lesson).

Highly recommended!

Starting with French 1 and moving to French 11, I used the program every day as recommended. French 1 was just the right speed, with enough repetition that I felt I had pretty well mastered it. French 11 was another story. The past tense usage was not very clear. Many new words were presented without enough repetition and even though I went over many of the lessons twice I did not get them enough to use. I will start all of French 11 again and hope and hope I am able to understand it. I liked in French 1 having a question asked, time to try it, then speaker repeats, and again I have enough time to try then speaker repeats once more.

Comments about French II, Comprehensive:

The course deals exclusively with spoken French. The student is trained to speak quickly using common constructions. This is only one piece of learning a language of course. There is also reading, writing, and oral comprehension. Trying to learn French entirely with Pimsleur is a little like trying to walk with one half of a leg. Having said all that, Pimsleur, as far as it goes, is useful. I don't know of any other language program that trains the student to speak instinctively.

I am poareparing to visit the Rhône region of France next fall. Speaking French will be very important to my enjoying touring the wine regions and talking with wine makers.

I find the lessons to be fast paced and challenging enough to keep my interest. Additionally, I can tell thaqt I am making progress in a meaningful way.

    Comments about French II, Comprehensive:

I absolutely love Pimsleur. I have a long commute to work and I have found a useful thing to do while I drive. I know that there is no way I would set time aside to learn a language at home so I do it while I drive. Best use of my time. As long as I'm driving I plan to use Pimsleur. Great product!
