The Easiest and Fastest Way to Learn French
Whether you want to travel, communicate with friends or colleagues, reconnect with family, or just understand more of what’s going on in the world around you, learning French will expand your horizons and immeasurably enrich your life.

The best part is that it doesn’t have to be difficult or take years to master. Thirty minutes a day is all it takes, and we get you speaking right from the first day. Pimsleur courses use a scientifically-proven method that puts you in control of your learning. If you’ve tried other language learning methods but found they simply didn’t stick, then you owe it to yourself to give Pimsleur a try.

Why Pimsleur?
- Quick + Easy – Only 30 minutes a day.
- Portable + Flexible – Core lessons can be done anytime, anywhere, and easily fit into your busy life.
- Proven Method – Works when other methods fail.
- Self-Paced – Go fast or go slow – it’s up to you.
- Based in Science – Developed using proven research on memory and learning.
- Cost-effective – Less expensive than classes or immersion, and features all native speakers.
- Genius – Triggers your brain’s natural aptitude to learn.
- Works for everyone – Recommended for ages 13 and above.

What’s Included?
- 30, 30-minute audio lessons
- 60 minutes of reading instruction to provide you with an introduction to reading French designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent
- in total, 16 hours of audio, all featuring native speakers
- a Reading Booklet and a User’s Guide

What You’ll Learn
In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.

In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.

In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons begin in Lesson 9 to provide you with an introduction to reading French. In addition, the combined Reading Lessons are included after Lesson 30. These Reading Lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The French Language
French is spoken by 55 million speakers in France, 3 million in Belgium, 1.5 million in Switzerland, 6.5 million in Canada, and 5 million in former French and Belgian colonies. It is an official language in 44 countries and an official language of the United Nations. An estimated 50 million people around the world speak French as a second language.

To whom it may concern:

I wanted to write to you and say thank you for the excellent language programs that you provide. I was considered unable to learn a language in High school and struggled with Spanish in college. I first tried your 10 day French program 6 years ago and I still have retained the conversations learned there in. About a month and a half ago I went overseas for the first time to Italy and was very nervous about not knowing the language. I had one month to learn Italian and since I was so confident with the French that I learned from your compnay, I decided to try your Italian program. I was blown away at how easy it was to learn a new language and retain it along with my French. Not only was I was able to understand conversation I was able to speak it and be understood by all the people I came in contact with in Rome. I was able to help my family find directions to places we wanted to go and I was able to order food and drink with ease and by the end of my week there I felt very comfortable with the language so much so that several cab driver mistook me as a local. The French also came in handy when I got lost and I went to ask for directions and I was able to get directions from a French tourist.
The Pimsleurworks and I highly recommend it to anyone who is wanting to learn a language and be able to converse in it. I never dreamed that I would be able to speak another language and you have proved that I can! Thank you for this amazing experience and for helping me communicate and become connected with the world around me. I highly recommend Pimsleur languages because it works and it works very well. Have a wonderful day.

Sincerely,

Brandon A. McCluskey

This product is very efficient in that it audibly speaks exactly how the words and phrases are to be pronounced, and requires you to speak back. The way it takes you through a process of firstly speaking formally to natives about things related to travel and foreign matters is a necessary process. The graduated interval recall is very reassuring and beneficial, as I think, "I DEFinitely know this one!" and it fires up my confidence.
A couple things that didn't work personally for ME: I am definitely more of a visual and tangible learner. I often have trouble with hearing foreign things and remembering them. Visual aids such as pictures, the actual words and spellings, and other acquaintances aid in the ingraining of the material in my mind. Secondly, this is a foreign language. At times I feel like the speakers are flying by with words and phrases I'm supposed to know. It irks me that I can't see the spelling of the word, or even that the speakers don't slow down to "stupid people" level speaking. I was drastically needing readings and spellings of the words I'd had thrown at me. Even the method is largely based on "speaking like a native" and avoids displaying words, I think it should at least show translations starting at lesson 10. I've heard several times that memory is ingrained far more with more senses stimulated (feeling, hearing, seeing, smelling[?]), and I believe it could make such a difference with memorizing words.
In a nutshell, this product works for me, and maybe more so for other audio learners. But I think the product could work drastically more if spellings or pictures were introduced later on in the lessons.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

This is an outstanding program to either refresh your knowledge skills or just starting out. I've been away from the language for many years and this was a perfect way to get back into learning. If you are looking for a great way to learn a language in a simple, useful way, this is it! You'll be able to go at your own pace and spend about 30 minutes/day to get very comfortable and confident. I like that the lessons don't give me too much background on the words, but just what they mean and how to use them. Well done!!

I think this method is excellent--it provides just the right amount of new information in each lesson to keep you moving forward and enough repetition to reinforce what you already know.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I am accompanying my Grandaughter on a Spring Break middle school trip to France. Having lived eight years in Europe and travelled often in France I feel confident ordering a ham sandwich or a crepe, but that is about it. Language is not my forte. I have completed 20 of my 30 lessons and feel more confident each day in my understanding. The format of the lessons makes it easy and the recommended 1/2 hour a day fits well in my schedule. I think I will understand more French now and with practice be able to speak more easily. I have no confidence in my writing ability, but I chose this course for conversation and understanding only. I am amazed that I am able to figure out what most of the words are in the reading lessons!

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Using this course to help me remember my 45 years ago college French. It is perfectly paced for me. I listen for a half hour every day while driving. I do not know how well this would work for someone with no previous exposure to the language.
