What You’ll Learn

This program includes the complete Pimsleur Chinese (Mandarin) Course; Levels 1-5.

With this program you start from zero, first learning survival phrases and vocabulary, and eventually progressing to a high-intermediate level of speaking and understanding Mandarin. Every lesson contains an introductory conversation and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice of all vocabulary introduced. The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension to promote proficiency in spoken Mandarin. At the completion of this course, you’ll speak confidently using your wide-ranging vocabulary, and experience the language and culture with a deepening insight into a new world.

Notes are included at the end of Lesson 30 for Levels 1-4. Totaling 3 and a half hours, these notes are designed to provide you with background information on the language and insight into the Chinese culture.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Level 5 Lesson 30. These lessons are designed to teach you to read Hanyu Pinyin (pinyin for short) the official phonetic system for transcribing pronunciations of Chinese characters into a Latin alphabet. Totaling one hour 15 minutes, the lessons will teach you to sound out written words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is included in PDF format.

The Pimsleur Method

We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Mandarin Language

Over one billion people speak Chinese. The two most common dialects are Mandarin and Cantonese. They are not mutually intelligible. Mandarin is the official language in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore. The Mandarin dialect is used in most Chinese schools, and in most TV programs, movies, and radio stations throughout the country, and even in Guangzhou (formerly Canton), where people speak Cantonese in their daily lives. Mandarin is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Comments about Pimsleur Chinese (Mandarin) Levels 1-5 CD:

This is my 10th language I've learned with Pimsleur. Before discovering Pimsleur I struggled with various different ways of learning languages. With Pimsleur the learning is no struggle at all. I can now speak Mandarin well and as with all the languages I've learned this way I'm always being told that i have a perfect accent. The subjects covered by the different levels are interesting and appropriate. The section on architecture, engineering and design came in very useful when describing the contribution of Brunel, to my home city of Bristol, to some Chinese visitors. To further improve my Mandarin, I attended classes, but quickly discovered i was the most able student already, although i have never been to China and most of the other students had studied there for some time. The teacher could not believe i could speak so well without having been to China, and that was only after completing level 4. Now i have finished level 5, if there are no further levels being produced, I will need private, one to one lessons i guess.

Comments about Pimsleur Chinese (Mandarin) Levels 1-5 MP3:

I'm currently working at a Chinese owned and operated mine in the Yukon. With the exception of the boss's two daughters, no one else here really speaks any functional English.

I've been dabbling with Mandarin Chinese for probably 20 years or more, but have never really made an effort to get serious with the language until now. When I was asked to come work here, one of my first thoughts was "What a great opportunity to learn Chinese in Canada!"

So I've gone through the first 15 lessons so far, and find that I am actually learning functional Mandarin Chinese that I can USE. I have nothing but time on my hands, all day long, as I sit in front of a trommel, loading rock into a hopper. So I plug my phone into the charger and just let the mp3 lessons play, for hours and hours on end, until I can't stand to hear them any more. I typically get through about half a dozen lessons in a day before I have to pull the plug. But by the time I do that, I can tell that my brain is saturated with Chinese.

I'll be working here for another five weeks; after I return home, I now know that I will be motivated to continue all the way to the end of the course. I've been using Rosetta Stone as well, and it also works for me, but I have to say that I find the Pimsleur method to be superior. I find that I learn more, and learn it faster, when I don't have to sit in front of a computer, clicking on pictures.

I do prefer to combine courses, so I'm using Rocket Chinese, Rosetta Stone, and Pimsleur. But I'm getting much more bang for the buck, and a bigger return on the TIME invested, from the Pimsleur course.

Some might say that lacking a visual component is a con, but there are other courses available (the obvious one being Rosetta Stone) that are heavily visual. The Pimsleur course frees me from that, and allows me to study Chinese anywhere, anytime that I can play mp3 files on my phone.

As to the price, it is well worth the asking price. Lot's of bang for the buck.

Several years ago I bought and used one of your programs to learn some elementary Italian for a trip to Rome and Naples. It was very useful.
