The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Mandarin Chinese Language
Over one billion people speak Chinese. The two most common dialects are Mandarin and Cantonese. They are not mutually intelligible. Mandarin is the official language in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore. The Mandarin dialect is used in most Chinese schools, and in most TV programs, movies, and radio stations throughout the country, even in Guangzhou (formerly Canton), where people speak Cantonese in their daily lives. Mandarin is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Tech Talk
- CDs are formatted for playing in all CD players, including car players, and users can copy files for use in iTunes or Windows Media Player.

Comments about Chinese (Mandarin) Phases 1-4:

I've used the Mandarin lessons in phase 1 thru phase 4 for the past 18 months and am quite happy with the results.

The lessons offer a systematic progression so that lesson 110 for example is far more difficult that lesson 10.

I purchased the mp3 downloadable version directly from Pimsleur. You can also buy the CD version, but I think that might be a bit more expensive.

I listen to them during my approximately 30 minute commute twice daily. On weekends I usually manage a lesson per day. Since I'm driving anyway I consider this free time not wasted. It actually makes my drive a little more pleasant since I'm not concentrating on the slow poke ahead of me staring at the green light.

There may be faster learners than me but expect to have to repeat the lessons. I've probably listened to lessons 31 thru 120 about 6 times each.

All told they probably add up to a vocabulary of around 800 words, but you feel pretty confident because you can recognize those words when spoken and quickly call them to mind without really thinking.

I took two years of both Spanish and French in college and came no where close to being able to conduct an even rudimentary conversation. Mandarin is much more difficult for an English speaker than either of those.

So, I highly recommend this approach and am quite satisfied with the outcome.

Comments about Chinese (Mandarin) Phases 1-4:

I began studying Chinese in college, got an MA in Modern Chinese History and many years later taught English in China for two years. I learned to read and write Chinese but never felt at ease speaking until I completed the Pimsleur course. If I had taken the course years ago I would have gotten more out of the time I spent in China. Thanks Pimsleur !

Comments about Chinese (Mandarin) Phases 1-4:

I travel to China 3 to 5 times per year and have wanted to learn the language for quite some time. I took a Mandarin class at a local school but the learning process was very slow.

Pimsleur's method is very different and fits my needs perfectly. For the price of two semesters worth of classes (where I only learn a few key phrases), I purchased 120 lessons that work in real life situations.

I bought the digital downloads and loaded them onto CDs which I use in my car during my commute to work. This process is great because I can rewind and repeat as often as I like. My progress has been quick and my Chinese colleagues are able to understand me when I speak...so I know this is working.

I am so pleased that I plan to purchase the Spanish lessons as well to refresh those skills as well. I highly recommend this product!

              Comments about Chinese (Mandarin) I-IV:

Pimsleur has done it again. I have previously found its language programs superbly effective for a basic level of communication in another language. After completing about 25% of Mandarin I, I am astonished at what I can say already. As well as what I can still learn as a senior. It's easy to learn and retain the necessary communication skill. I also really like the speakers used, because it's easy to mimic expression and tone beyond what you might see written in a textbook by listening closely to the speakers. Thanks Pimseur!!

Comments about Chinese (Mandarin) Phases 1-4:

I live in China but after over four years of trying to learn enough Chinese to live using adhoc methods, I had learned considerable vocabulary but really had practically no conversational ability. My family is Chinese but they are truly not good at helping me with learning. Enter Pimsleur, after many unsuccessful attempts using Rosetta Stone. I spent at least 400 hours on an old version of the program which had three parts, repeating it over and over and then trying things out with my family. Within 6 months, I could move about in China with some confidence on my own. Therefore, I then purchased the new version of Mandarin I-IV. I am now doing that series - it's too easy in many ways, but I need repetition. I estimate I'll spend 9 months on Pimsleur total and even later use the more advanced lessons for review. The best part is ability to conveniently use on my cellphone. I do 2-3 lessons daily at the gym this way. I've got a long, long ways to go with Chinese, but Pimsleur gave me the critical mass and confidence to really start learning.
