What You’ll Learn
This Mandarin Chinese program includes all of Pimsleur’s Mandarin Chinese Levels 1 & 2. With this program you start from zero, first learning survival phrases and vocabulary, and eventually progressing to a mid-intermediate level of speaking and understanding Mandarin Chinese.

Every lesson contains an introductory conversation, and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice for all vocabulary introduced. Emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension. At the completion of this course, you’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future; you’ll speak confidently using your wide-ranging vocabulary, and experience The Mandarin Chinese Language and culture with a deepening insight.

Culture Notes are included at the end of Lesson 30 for each Level. Totaling about two hours, These notes are designed to provide you with background information on the language and insight into the culture.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Mandarin Chinese Language
Over one billion people speak Chinese. The two most common dialects are Mandarin and Cantonese. They are not mutually intelligible. Mandarin is the official language in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore. The Mandarin dialect is used in most Chinese schools, and in most TV programs, movies, and radio stations throughout the country, even in Guangzhou (formerly Canton), where people speak Cantonese in their daily lives. Mandarin is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

        It's the best.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phases 1-2:

I own Madarin Chinese I, II and III. I've been listening to these for years while I bike ride during my lunch break. Honestly... my Chinese and my pronounciation is quite good, just from listening to these CD's. Why am I writing the review? I emailed Pimsulur and asked them to please make volume IV. They told me that perhaps I should write a review to make my experience public, which could help increase demand. So let me state it clearly: I love Pimsuleur and I will be the first to buy Mandarin IV if and when it is released.

        Sincerely,
        Jack K.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phases 1-2:

I listen to a lesson every day on my way into work. I love that I don't have to find a dedicated 30 minutes on my personal time to begin learning Mandarin (since I have to commute anyway), but I'm realizing that to take it to the next level I will have to take that step. This is the right way to be introduced to the language though before too much "studying" is required. I'm just finishing level 2 now, and will be purchasing level 3. The key is to go through a lesson almost every day - twice during the program I took a week off, and the re-entry was harder than I expected. They do a great job of having both a male and a female speak during the lessons so that you can hear what the same word in a different pitch sounds like, and I like that the speakers both also have slightly different pronunciations (maybe one is from the north and one from the south?) which helps one to get a sense of the "range" of what the word sounds like. All the phrases are basic travel/tourist phrases so far ("I'd like to order a beer", "I can speak a little mandarin", "It's a quarter before eight", "go straight then take a left") but they're what you'd want to know if you were travelling, so they've chosen the most useful. I considered docking a star because I'm now much better at coming up with the Mandarin words for a thought than I am interpreting the conversations at the beginning of each lesson, but there's no way to really test for comprehension so I understand why they don't emphasize it more. As a result though I think my listening skills are proportionately less developed than my speaking skills. I've also come to realize that I'm developing my communication skills, but I have no capacity to read or write the language which will be a significant barrier if I travel there and haven't supplemented this course with outside learning. I've also been listening to Chinapod on iTunes as others had suggested, and while that's more advanced Mandarin than these lessons, I do pick up words and phrases here and there and it's rewarding to have a general sense of what they're trying to communicate. I listen to each Pimsleur module twice in a row before moving on, and once I finish level 2 I'm going to go back to the very beginning again and just go through each of them once more before starting level 3. Sometimes a lesson will feel like they're throwing a lot of new vocabulary at me and I sometimes get confused, but I still listen to the rest of the lesson trying to pick up what I can, which makes the repeat tomorrow much easier. I just re-listen to any module that gives me trouble until I hit the 80% success mark, and being able to replay them at my own pace is a terrific benefit of the courses. I debated between this and other programs, but I didn't want to have to sit in front of my computer or dedicate 30 minutes to this topic until I was sure I wanted to make that commitment, so for me this was an ideal solution. I think it's a terrific product, I've really enjoyed using it, and would recommend it to others. I'm now strongly considering buying their Spanish language lessons since I took two years of it in high school but could really use a refresher.
