What You’ll Learn
Builds upon skills taught in Pimsleur’s Mandarin Chinese Levels 1 and 2.

In the first 10 lessons, you will expand your vocabulary and increase your fluency to an even higher level. You’ll gain experience participating in many informal and some formal discussions on practical, social, and semiprofessional topics. You’ll skillfully form longer, more complex sentences, and most importantly, you’ll find yourself being understood, even by native speakers unused to dealing with foreigners. You’ll be able to join in conversations eagerly, confident of being understood.

In the next 10 lessons, your skills will demonstrate ever-increasing mastery of Mandarin Chinese. Speaking with grace and complete naturalness, you’ll enjoy fluid conversations on many new subjects. Delving deeper into cultural norms and situations, you’ll find yourself responding effortlessly, and able to choose from a wide accumulation of vocabulary and structures.

In the final 10 lessons, you’re nearing fluency with agile responses, and a natural sounding, near-native accent. You’re able to utilize the language in subtle ways, and speak using past, present, and future tenses. Self-confidence soars as you no longer experience the language and culture as a foreigner, but as someone with a deepening insight into the Mandarin Chinese-speaking world.

One hour of recorded Cultural Notes are included at the end of Lesson 30. These notes are designed to provide you with some insight into Mandarin Chinese culture. A Culture Notes booklet is also included in your download.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Mandarin Chinese Language
Over one billion people speak Chinese. The two most common dialects are Mandarin and Cantonese. They are not mutually intelligible. Mandarin is the official language in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore. The Mandarin dialect is used in most Chinese schools, and in most TV programs, movies, and radio stations throughout the country, even in Guangzhou (formerly Canton), where people speak Cantonese in their daily lives. Mandarin is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Five months ago my mother-in-law arrived from China to live permanently with my family. I spoke virtually no Mandarin when she arrived. I started with Pimsleur Mandarin 1 a few weeks later, practicing in my car going to and from work. I am now on Lesson 16 of Mandarin 3. I am able to have everyday conversations with my mother-in-law, and both my wife and her mother are astonished at how quickly I am picking up the intonation and the grammer of the language. I have studied several other languages using different methods; this is by far the best language learning experience I've ever had. It could be improved if the course came with transcripts of the lessons, with the Chinese part written in Pinyin. At the minimum the new vocabulary of each lesson should be available for reading and review.

Comments about Pimsleur Chinese (Mandarin) Level 3 MP3:

Hi,
I have been using the product for about 6 months now and find it suites my way of learning a new language very effectively.
I had been attending formal classes prior to that, but not making as much progress as I'd have liked.
I am more interested in being able to 'talk the talk' and order lunch, than struggling with grammar, etc.
As I downloaded the MP3 versions, thus I can practice in my car, twice a day while commuting. Maybe not the optimum place to learn, but works for me.
Using different speakers varies and improves the learning experience.

Service and delivery comments:

Where the same word is used in a new context, it would be helpful to explain it is another or additional meaning for the same word.
I'm not sure how old the recordings are, but a Taiwanese friend I practice on, has suggested alternate phrases on occasion. It's not that the lesson is wrong, just not the phrase of current choice.
Might be beneficial to include a dictionary of characters in the notes for each lesson.
As the lessons become more advanced, add more or increase use of instructions in the language itself.

Comments about Pimsleur Chinese (Mandarin) Level 3 MP3:

I'm at lesson 11 of Mandarin 3. I started this program in October 2013. I speak Mandarin better now, at about the halfway point than I did Spanish after two years of college Spanish. Of course there is no reading and writing, but with Mandarin, literacy is an entirely different skill set. There appears to be about zero relationship between written and spoken Mandarin. I use the course during my daily commute and it works great. I typically will go through the lesson 3-4 times before I have it well enough to move on, but if you have a 30 minute commute that's a new lesson every two days.

    Service and delivery comments:

#1 I would add more courses. I'm excited to see that there is recently added an Mandarin 4. However at the pace I'm going I expect to have about a 4 - 5 hundred word vocabulary when I finish. I'd like to continue and would definitely pay for more advanced lessons.

#2 There could be better spacing between the questions and answers in the lessons. Sometimes I have only a second or so to answer a fairly complicated compound sentence with past tense before the answer is given. Then an easy question with a pause of several seconds before the answer is given. The timing could be better. That said, it is the only thing that I would improve upon.
