The Mandarin Chinese Language
Over one billion people speak Chinese. The two most common dialects are Mandarin and Cantonese. They are not mutually intelligible. Mandarin is the official language in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore. The Mandarin dialect is used in most Chinese schools, and in most TV programs, movies, and radio stations throughout the country, even in Guangzhou (formerly Canton), where people speak Cantonese in their daily lives. Mandarin is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 2, Unit 01-05:

The Chinese Mandarin course by Pimsleur is very good. I have found one error in the first unit of this phase. I hope there aren't too many more. Proper review of the product before marketing should remove any errors. Too bad that that doesn't occur.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 2, Unit 01-05:

This method seems very good at getting one comfortable with throwing basic sentences together. Very good!!! It would be nice though if there were more listening comprehension parts. Instead of going from english to mandarine all the time there needs to be more mandarine to english. also, a little more esoteric vocabulary thrown in could make things more interesting. I guess i mean nouns for words like tigre, pink and gun.
Also, the first time i downloaded the lessons i accidentally downloaded the first five twice, with separate credit cards, as it did not seem to work the first time. Seeing as I intend to keep buying these lessons, I'd like a coupon for some free lessons. I tried to contact costumer service but nobody got back to me.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 2, Unit 01-05:

I have just completed all 3 phases of Mandarin. I find that Pimsleur method is the most effective language learning tool. I have tried Rosetta Stone and it is not nearly as effective. I have also taken college courses. Taking courses does teach you more grammar but they are much more time instensive. The best approach to learn mandarin completely is to combine Pimsleur with a good college text book course like the Integrated chinese series from Cheng and Tsui.
