The Pimsleur® Method is scientifically proven to be your fastest route to near-native fluency. Speak and understand Mandarin Chinese in just 30 minutes a day.
This course includes Lessons 16-20 from the Chinese (Mandarin) Level 1 program featuring 2.5 hours of language instruction. Each lesson provides 30 minutes of spoken language practice, with an introductory conversation, and new vocabulary and structures. Detailed instructions enable you to understand and participate in the conversation. Practice for vocabulary introduced in previous lessons is included in each lesson. The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension, and on learning to speak Mandarin Chinese.

The Mandarin Chinese Language
Over one billion people speak Chinese. The two most common dialects are Mandarin and Cantonese. They are not mutually intelligible. Mandarin is the official language in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore. The Mandarin dialect is used in most Chinese schools, and in most TV programs, movies, and radio stations throughout the country, even in Guangzhou (formerly Canton), where people speak Cantonese in their daily lives. Mandarin is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Comments about Pimsleur Chinese (Mandarin) Level 1 Lessons 16-20 MP3:

I listen to CDs in the car while driving between Austin and Houston (3 hrs). I can do two lessons during that time or repeat one lesson. It has been very useful and I have learned faster than with programs on my laptop, though possibly what I learn on my laptop stays with me longer because I see it written while studying,.

    Pimsleur
    A critique

I am continually amazed by this approach to learning a language. I thought that at 70 years old I might be too old to learn, but with all the new research into the Brain and the findings of the amazing plasticity involved in the Brain, that I might give it a try. It definitely works.
This is truly the way we first learned to speak language as children, and it has not changed. This approach has tapped onto this amazing way of learning and perfected it. I find myself perhaps spending more time on each lesson than younger people might, however, I believe that may be a matter of how much time each day every individual puts into it. At first I stayed with the 30 minimum per day, and even had some difficulty with that schedule. After 4 or 5 lessons though, I began to put in more time; i.e. once in the morning and another at night just before sleeping. I also found myself going through each lesson 4-6 times. Im not sure what others do, but I feel doing this allows me to thoroughly know it better.
Each new lesson is difficult for me however, often finding that I cant even 'hear' the correct pronunciation the first time around. It feels frustrating, however, after the second and third time through the lesson I ALWAYS get it, Then I polish it with a few more times through, depending upon my schedule.
An interesting 'side-effect' if this learning process, is that I feel truly exhilarated after a lesson, and have found myself wanting to learn other new things along with learning a new language. It is as if it has 'woken' areas of my Brain up, and my Brain says,"I want more. Give me more."

Comments about Pimsleur Chinese (Mandarin) Level 1 Lessons 16-20 MP3:

I'm loving the Pimsleur method! In just a few lessons my Chinese pronunciation has improved dramatically in ways that never happened while in Chinese school as a kid!

My only issue with the Chinese ones is that the main male voice sounds like Kermit the Frog! It's just an unfortunate coincidence. But I do find it distracting because as I'm trying to mimic his pronunciation I can't help but to also throw in the Kermit! The narrator sounds so proud as he sings out the phrases in Kermit-speak too.

I have to remove a star for that. Otherwise it's pretty great.

Comments about Pimsleur Chinese (Mandarin) Level 1 Lessons 16-20 MP3:

I listen to the lessons while riding my bike every day and they are my perfect companion. In the way they are designed, they stimulate my thinking and thus make it easier to memorize the language constructions. I regularly repeat each lesson several times to perfect the pronunciation.
