This course includes Lessons 16-20 from the Chinese (Mandarin) Level 1 program featuring 2.5 hours of language instruction. Each lesson provides 30 minutes of spoken language practice, with an introductory conversation, and new vocabulary and structures. Detailed instructions enable you to understand and participate in the conversation. Practice for vocabulary introduced in previous lessons is included in each lesson. The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension, and on learning to speak Mandarin Chinese.

The Mandarin Chinese Language
Over one billion people speak Chinese. The two most common dialects are Mandarin and Cantonese. They are not mutually intelligible. Mandarin is the official language in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore. The Mandarin dialect is used in most Chinese schools, and in most TV programs, movies, and radio stations throughout the country, even in Guangzhou (formerly Canton), where people speak Cantonese in their daily lives. Mandarin is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Pimsleur
A critique

I am continually amazed by this approach to learning a language. I thought that at 70 years old I might be too old to learn, but with all the new research into the Brain and the findings of the amazing plasticity involved in the Brain, that I might give it a try. It definitely works.
This is truly the way we first learned to speak language as children, and it has not changed. This approach has tapped onto this amazing way of learning and perfected it. I find myself perhaps spending more time on each lesson than younger people might, however, I believe that may be a matter of how much time each day every individual puts into it. At first I stayed with the 30 minimum per day, and even had some difficulty with that schedule. After 4 or 5 lessons though, I began to put in more time; i.e. once in the morning and another at night just before sleeping. I also found myself going through each lesson 4-6 times. Im not sure what others do, but I feel doing this allows me to thoroughly know it better.
Each new lesson is difficult for me however, often finding that I cant even 'hear' the correct pronunciation the first time around. It feels frustrating, however, after the second and third time through the lesson I ALWAYS get it, Then I polish it with a few more times through, depending upon my schedule.
An interesting 'side-effect' if this learning process, is that I feel truly exhilarated after a lesson, and have found myself wanting to learn other new things along with learning a new language. It is as if it has 'woken' areas of my Brain up, and my Brain says,"I want more. Give me more."

I drive to work daily from LA to Orange County. Its 1.25 hrs each way. I manage international teams.

I love how well the recordings are engineered, the sound quality is great, the course could not be more perfect for me. I am so impressed at how I am really understanding the language, and I enjoy the process.

One distinct thing would drastically improve my experience. The purchasing of these recordings is outdated and therefore frustrating. I have to go to the Pimsleur website on my computer, then buy, then download, then I place it in my dropbox, then I had to get an app that plays recordings from dropbox. If there was a Pimsleur player app, or these were available as audiobooks on Audible, it would be PERFECT. Audible does a great job with a great interface. If you made an app for my droid which stored my CC info in my account, then suggested the next in the series to purchase, I would consume Pimsleur languages like a fat man eats potato chips and soda.

Comments about Pimsleur Chinese (Mandarin) Level 1 Lessons 16-20 MP3:

Pimsleur Levels 1-5 mp3 are the way to go if you are serious about becoming verbally fluent in Mandarin. If you are a complete beginner as I was, Pimsleur is the place to start. I started Thanksgiving 2016 with Level 1 buying five mp3 units at a time until I was certain that I would enjoy the process. I am now (February 8, 2017) on Level 3 lesson 5, and have purchased all the remaining lessons which fit easily on my iPhone6 and MacBook Air. The lessons are about a half hour each, but I need to go over each lesson two or three times paying careful attention. I am amazed at how much I am retaining. Go through all 150 lessons in mp3 Levels 1-5, which should take about five months, and then if you are still committed, survey your many on line options and continue from there.

Comments about Pimsleur Chinese (Mandarin) Level 1 Lessons 16-20 MP3:

I listen to CDs in the car while driving between Austin and Houston (3 hrs). I can do two lessons during that time or repeat one lesson. It has been very useful and I have learned faster than with programs on my laptop, though possibly what I learn on my laptop stays with me longer because I see it written while studying,.

I have tried many programs including Rosetta Stone and this [Pimsleur] is the first time I am learning how to converse with correct grammatical form and great confidence.
