Comments about Chinese (Can) Phase 1, Unit 06-10:

I bought CD version of lessons 1-10 on line, and used it with lessons from a native Cantonese speaker (which, while helpful, is not necessary). The method uses only aural training by repetition of words, phrases, and dialogs, without written material and with only very minimal explanation of the tones. I was helped by my teacher and by additional material which I had to find myself through internet searches. While this additional material might contaminate the "purity" of the Pimsleur aural approach, I think it makes for more efficient learning.

I find the recorded speech in this set to be especially effective, because the speakers utter the words both slowly, at a pace the beginner can discern, as well as at normal native conversational speed. Continuing review of earlier material is provided throughout the lessons, a very good feature. I recommend it, but with the suggestion that the user should supplement this entirely aural method with online material, obtained by searching for online Cantonese courses, and topics such as "Cantonese language" and "Cantonese tones."
