Description

Includes 30 lessons and culture notes on 16 CDs, plus a culture notes booklet

Cantonese, one of several major languages in China, is mainly spoken in Hong Kong, Guangdong, the Guangxi provinces, and in most overseas Chinese communities in Australia, Europe, and North America. Pimsleur's Cantonese teaches Cantonese as spoken in Hong Kong.

Comprehensive Cantonese Chinese includes 30 lessons of essential grammar and vocabulary -- 16 hours of real-life spoken practice sessions -- plus a Culture Booklet. Upon completion of this program, you will have functional spoken proficiency with the most-frequently-used vocabulary and grammatical structures.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more.  You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items.  You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. More directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane.  Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family.

One hour of recorded Cultural Notes are included at the end of Unit 30. These notes are designed to provide you with some insight into Chinese culture. A Notes Booklet is also included in PDF format.

I have been practicing using this course for several months, repeating each lesson several time to make the words and the (difficult) pronunciation stay in mind. Too bad for me I'm just traveling to Hong Kong and not living there. But now when I go there I am able to have some very basic conversation.
However the product is perhaps a little bit unbalanced towards the speaking part: in fact my listening skills have not improved as much as my speaking skills. It has happened that I couldn't understand someone saying some sentence I know and can pronounce very well.
If I may give a suggestion to other users, it's very important to persist and insist a lot with this language, doing at least half an hour per day. It is also very important to immediately try to use what learned.

I am using Cantonese. The content was fine, which is why I originally was going to give 5 stars until a glitch that erased all the lessons on my iphone, and cannot be restored. Someone from tech support was graciously trying to help, but the problem has persisted for a week now.

Comments about Chinese (Can) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

If you review the sessions every day, your languagewill develop. It introduces you to the grammer without being tedious. It has helped me recover my lost Cantonese skills, I hope to go further.
Downside, is that there isn't voice recognition software to help you match sounds and tones with native speakers.

Comments about Chinese (Can) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I moved to Hong Kong in 2012 and I decided I wanted to learn some Cantonese. The Pimsleur Method made it so easy for me. After only 30 lessons I have a good grasp of basic Cantonese.
This is an absolutely superb way of learning a new language.

Comments about Chinese (Can) Phase 1, Units 1-30:

the overall quality of this program is great, the pronunciation sounds native and you can truly learn a lot from daily practice . you will copy a sentence at least 10 times during each lesson and things you've learned days ago will be reviewed at a certain point of time in the future. however, the tempo usually is pretty slow, instead of repeating the same thing again and again, i prefer to learn more challenging slang. there are no reading and writing component at all, so basically you're learning like a blind person. especially for the case of Cantonese, a different tone can mean a totally different thing, without letters and words, it can only make this language way harder...

      Service and delivery comments:

      i want level 2 and 3
add the writing part, and vocabulary list with Chinese letters which users can refer to
