The Modern Standard Arabic Language
Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), also known as Standard Arabic or Literary Arabic, is the variety of Arabic used in writing and in formal speech. MSA is spoken by an estimated 300 million people world-wide. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Modern Standard Arabic is the official language of all Arab countries, and is the only form of Arabic taught in schools at all levels. Because of this, MSA is the lingua franca of all educated Arabic-speakers, regardless of nationality or spoken native dialect. It is used in the news, schools, official documents, and courts of law. MSA bears great resemblance to Classical Arabic; the language of ancient poetry and the Qu'ran. The Arabic alphabet contains 28 basic letters and is read from right to left.

Comments about Pimsleur Arabic (Modern Standard) Level 2 Lessons 1-5 MP3:

I've completed both levels one and two of Pimseleur's Modern Standard Arabic. The complete course was a great leap for me in terms of my understanding of grammar. It was also awesome to play the lessons in my car during commutes (I used the app on my smartphone). This forced me to progress at a minimum pace. I'm still not fluent in Arabic, but my understanding has definitely gotten to a new level. I completely recommend this course. I plan to review the level 2 set once more.

I found it fun as many times the conversations practiced could easily be imagined as one travels through the middle east. It sometimes smacked of flirting, which was funny and made me laugh as much as learn.
