What’s Included?

- In total, 16 hours of audio, all featuring native speakers
- a Reading Booklet and a User’s Guide

What You’ll Learn
In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.

In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.

In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in Modern Standard Arabic, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Lesson 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Arabic alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with Modern Standard Arabic pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Modern Standard Arabic Language
Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), also known as Standard Arabic or Literary Arabic, is the variety of Arabic used in writing and in formal speech. MSA is spoken by an estimated 300 million people world-wide. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Modern Standard Arabic is the official language of all Arab countries, and is the only form of Arabic taught in schools at all levels. Because of this, MSA is the lingua franca of all educated Arabic-speakers, regardless of nationality or spoken native dialect. It is used in the news, schools, official documents, and courts of law. MSA bears great resemblance to Classical Arabic; the language of ancient poetry and the Qu'ran. The Arabic alphabet contains 28 basic letters and is read from right to left.

Comments about Pimsleur Arabic (Modern Standard) Level 1 MP3:

I use the product as it is described, going through each lesson without any distractors. It doesn't take a lot of time, and the program works fairly well. I've tried going through a lesson while doing chores, or driving to/from somewhere, and it's not nearly as effective that way. I advance the quickest when I can dedicate time to the lessons.

There are not many products for learning Arabic available on the market, and many of them only give a basic/novice level of understanding. Pimsluer does a good job at getting you to speak whole sentences from the beginning, and gradually developes your understanding of the grammar and vocabulary with each lesson.

I'm not satisified with only two levels. I think Pimsluer should continue to develope their materials for Arabic. It is growing in use around the world, and every day the need to learn this language increases. Esspecially for professionals that work/travel to that region (like myself). The first two levels are great... but please make more.

Comments about Pimsleur Arabic (Modern Standard) Level 1 MP3:

This is the third language series I have purchased from Pimsleur. It might not feel to a beginner that they are making progress but the sequence they use will enable them to learn enough of the language to start simple conversations with just the Level 1 series.

An inherent assumption is that we can learn all of a lesson within a day and if that's all one did it might work. For must of us that isn't practical as we tend to use the audio on our commute. So we need far more than a single day before we can move on. That's OK, it isn't a race.

Comments about Pimsleur Arabic (Modern Standard) Level 1 MP3:

My family and I been trying to learn Arabic for years and finally came across Pimsleur. We learned more in a day then we did trying to teach ourselves by book. I really like this product, it's simple and fun at the same time. We are also teaching our 11 month old and she is picking up on it very fast. This is by far, the best product we came across!

    oral language

    By luque

Comments about Pimsleur Arabic (Modern Standard) Level 1 MP3:

The audio is excellent. Learning a language orally is so efficient because you can actually hold conversations. Learning the language in script is only good AFTER you learn it orally because that's the natural way to learn it(that's how children learn). If you learn a language in script before learning it orally, you'll be exhausted and reluctant to learn it orally. And learning the script of a language is useless because you can't even put a sensible sentence together with that.
