What You’ll Learn
Builds upon skills taught in Pimsleur’s Arabic (Eastern) Levels 1 and 2.

In the first 10 lessons, you will expand your vocabulary and increase your fluency to an even higher level. You’ll gain experience participating in many informal and some formal discussions on practical, social, and semiprofessional topics. You’ll skillfully form longer, more complex sentences, and most importantly, you’ll find yourself being understood, even by native speakers unused to dealing with foreigners. You’ll be able to join in conversations eagerly, confident of being understood.

In the next 10 lessons, your skills will demonstrate ever-increasing mastery of Eastern Arabic. Speaking with grace and complete naturalness, you’ll enjoy fluid conversations on many new subjects. Delving deeper into cultural norms and situations, you’ll find yourself responding effortlessly, and able to choose from a wide accumulation of vocabulary and structures.

In the final 10 lessons, you’re nearing fluency with agile responses, and a natural sounding, near-native accent. You’re able to utilize the language in subtle ways, and speak using past, present, and future tenses. Self-confidence soars as you no longer experience the language and culture as a foreigner, but as someone with a deepening insight into the Eastern Arabic-speaking world.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Lesson 30. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to give you practice reading Eastern Arabic, to provide vocabulary and improve pronunciation. Before you know it, you’ll be reading Eastern Arabic with the ease and flexibility of a native speaker.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his secrets:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Eastern Arabic Language
Arabic is the world's 6th most common language with 295 million native speakers. It is also the liturgical language of 1.6 billion Muslims as it is the language of the Qur’an, the holy book of Islam.
Eastern Arabic is the dialect spoken in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine. Eastern Arabic is also very well understood in the eastern and southeastern parts of the Arab world -- Arabia, the Gulf Region, and Iraq. Pimsleur’s Eastern Arabic is based on the dialect of Damascus, Syria.

Comments about Pimsleur Arabic (Eastern) Level 3 MP3:

I use it as prescribed; but I find that I have to review the lessons, usually in groups of lessons; so the process takes longer than adveritised. But that is OK: I'm in no hurry. In the Reading Lessons, I wish you would provide translations (maybe separately) for the enteries. I can't always find them in the dictionary.
What would be very useful is if you would provide suggestions for continuing to learn Arabic after I have finished your last course. Otherwise, I will lose it.

Comments about Pimsleur Arabic (Eastern) Level 3 MP3:

This is a great course. It helped my continued learning of Arabic. I really wish they would come out with software and a 4th course. Include transliteration as well and these courses would be perfect.

Arabic is a hard language to learn and this is by far the best program for eastern arabic. Please add another course!

Comments about Arabic (Eastern) III, Comprehensive:

An excellent product and perfect for adding to your language building repertoire, irrespective of whatever language you might be learning. Many language packages and courses focus mostly on reading, listening and understand but oftentimes neglect the spoken aspect, a gap which the Pimsleur Method goes really far in closing and cultivates a natural ability to articulate what's on your mind. It kinda recalibrates and reconfigures your brain to respond without stuttering or hesitation, which is perfect for those who like myself, engage in self study and don't yet have the opportunity or confidence to speak the language publicly. I've been using the Eastern Arabic program, which most closely resembles the dialect of Syria but is generally quite versatile. The only downside is that there were only three parts and that Pimsleur to date has expressed no interest in releasing (a more advanced) part four, nor parts two in Egyptian or Modern Standard Arabic, which I'm also interested in. I'd also like to see perhaps a word-for-word transcript of everything that's said during the lessons, so there's no doubt as to how something's pronounced in the event that I may have miss-heard something. This happened a few times during the early stages of the course, when I wasn't as sensitive to the sound and of the language.

Comments about Pimsleur Arabic (Eastern) Level 3 MP3:

The is a dearth of materials available for learning the Syrian dialect and this course goes far towards helping people bridge the gap between Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and what they are more likely to hear on the street in the Levant. I would strongly recommend it to others who want a solid introduction to Syrian dialect.

    Service and delivery comments:

I would include more vocabulary. Even if the course wishes to stay in the tourism realm, segments on currency exchange, bartering, or hiring a guide would be good.

Comments about Pimsleur Arabic (Eastern) Level 3 MP3:

The 3 phases of Eastern Arabic were fun and rewarding to use, and left me able to communicate simple ideas in Arabic. I only have 3 complaints:

    1) It teaches you Syrian / Lebanese 'slang' -- my Sudanese in-laws were thoroughly amused by it (they speak their own Arabic 'slang'), but sometimes what I tried to say couldn't get across to them at all. Similarly, I wasn't able to understand them as often as I could have hoped. This isn't a problem if your interest is in speaking with Syrians / Lebanese, of course.

    2) There seemed to be discontinuity between the 3 different phases; slightly different vocabulary being used when you switched from Phase 2 to 3, for example. It isn't that big a deal; you can pick up the new style and start learning again pretty easily.

    3) I want more! More lessons, more vocabulary, practice in more conversational contexts, etc. It's too fun and easy to stop at 3 phases :)

Otherwise, I am very happy with the product.
