Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction (16 hours) as MP3 download, plus PDF user's guide and reading booklet

Vietnamese is spoken by some 80 million people in Vietnam and approximately 2 million people overseas. Vietnamese has 3 main dialects: northern, central, and southern. Pimsleur's Vietnamese teaches the contemporary Hanoi (northern) dialect, which is the widely-spoken standard Vietnamese.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Vietnamese Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Vietnamese alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with Vietnamese pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Vietnamese Phase 1, Units 1-30:

The interactive software does an excellent job introducing the learner to the Vietnamese language. This is a particularly difficult language for a westerner, as it has many sounds that do not exist en European tongues. The use of modified Latin characters in Vietnamese is anything but intuitive, as the individual letters, and combinations thereof do not sound in Vietnamese like anything a beginner might expect. I am working slowly through the program in anticipation to a trip to Vietnam, and I believe I will profit inmensely from this course. To my amazement, I can already understand some basic written and spoken sentences in Vietnamese. Look forward to learning more.

Comments about Vietnamese Phase 1, Units 1-30:

This is a great system and a great product. I typically would listen to a section 2 or 3 times a day, usually when driving or walking. I like that you learn the language in chunks as opposed to studying lists of vocab words and stringing them together. I was rather befuddled to find so many mistakes though. Many of the errors occur when the instructing voice gives a cue to say something in Vietnamese but an entirely different word is said instead. These are mistakes that anyone could pick up on, even if they didn't know a singe word of vietnamese, just by paying attention and listening critically. Either they didn't bother with a final edit, or the editor doesn't have a sharp attention span. Still though, I don't think the fact that there were mistakes throughout detracted from its effectiveness, it's more of a head scratcher than anything else.

      Service and delivery comments:

It would be nice to see more levels offered as there is presently only one.

Comments about Vietnamese Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I'm quite satisfy with the product for that price. The only issue I have is that the reading portion of does not coordinate with the listening section. I wish they could fix this and update it for me.

Comments about Vietnamese Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I've listened to these lessons at home usually, but I have also re-listened to several while driving in order to brush up. When I listened to lessons that were new to me, I had to give them my complete attention which is why I did them at home. I found re-listening was a great way to solidify things. Maybe other users won't need to do that but I did.

The lessons are absolutely great for learning grammar and sentence construction. I started out learning this language by using Pimsleur and it has given me a great foundation to work from. The repetition really solidified the words and phrases in my head, as well as proper sentence construction. I've found the best way to learn languages is by understanding grammar first and building your vocabulary from there...Pimsleur offers this opportunity. Pimsluer does offer a strong foundation vocabulary as well.

The speakers are clear, as well as the narrator. This is a great program to listen to. Offers lots of repetition as I've said, as well as offers small "reviews" of the last lesson at the beginning of the next. You will continue to build on what you learn and terms from several lessons ago are brought in to challenge you...I thought that was great. These CDs really work on the "recall" part of language learning which really is the best kind! (as opposed to recognition).

Around Lesson 17 or so I started using additional products (a text book, the FSI website), as well as creating flashcards to increase my vocabulary. With the foundation I got from Pimsleur, I was able to use new vocab words and fit them into sentences correctly.

In short, I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to learn Vietnamese as a first step.

These lessons are in the Nothern Accent...I had no problem with that but users should be aware.

Unfortunately there is only 1 Phase for this language. (30 lessons in the 1 Phase). I think Pimsleur should create a Phase 2 for this wonderful language!

Comments about Vietnamese Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I bought this to begin learning since my girlfriend is from Hanoi and we are taking a trip to Vietnam this summer. She has been very impressed with my word knowledge, pronunciation, tonality and ability to put sentences together from the parts of what the program teaches. She also likes that it is in the northern accent, since that's where she is from. I learned most of my German from Pimsleur CDs so I knew it was the fastest way to get some proficiency and much easier than banging your head against the wall with books or wasting tons of time learning nothing in a certain well-known language software. I've found this program works well in conjunction with some of the free YouTube videos, particularly "Learn Vietnamese With Annie", which provides a deeper look at some of the words and phrases taught in Pimsleur. This is definitely the best money you can spend to get some proficiency right away, and will bring you up to the level where you can interact with shopkeepers, waiters, etc, while giving you a foundation to build upon. I would really like to see a level 2 and level 3, which is my only complaint.
