Comments about Vietnamese, Conversational:
I purchased this program, after trying-out an older copy thru the public library. I am a combat-wounded Vietnam War vet, and am learning Vietnamese, before returning to Vietnam.
It's is a quality language-learning product, but I'm using it along it with a multi-sensory vietnamese learning program. I was a teacher, and I understand the logic and research behind the all-audio approach, but I learn more quickly and effectively when there are also visual inputs. Part of that is my learning style, and part of it is-that I am a partially hearing-impaired 70+ year-old. With a tonal language like Vietnamese, it is crucial that I hear the words correctly. I bought higher, then higher quality headphones to use with your program, but I found that, in some cases, I was not pronouncing words correctly. I found that out when I ignored the programs advice, and consulted a vietnamese dictionary/pronouncement guide. Practicing incorrectly, is not helpful.
I will continue to use this program, but not as my only "tool". I have loaded it on my i-Pod Touch, and--being audio-only is very convenient for some of my language practice.
Thank you for your quality product! If I work on another language, I will consider a Pimsleur program as part of "the mix". I would recommend this program, with the qualifiers mentioned above.

Comments about Vietnamese, Conversational:
I am very happy with my experience with Pimsler so far. I purchased the 16Cd set, and I am now only on disc 6. However, what I have learned so far has really helped me interact with my Vietnamese friends, whom I also train in Vovinam(Vietnamese martial arts) with. I am also attending regular classes in Vietnamese, so that I can also learn their written language. I practice by listening to my Pimsler CD's every day while I am stuck in traffic on my way to and from work. I have really noticed that over time, my ability to hear and understand Vietnamese as a whole is improving incrementally. When I study, I imagine that I am alone in Vietnam, and that fast learning of the language and culture is instrumental to my survival. Sometimes, a particular CD will seem very difficult to pronounce and understand, but after sticking to it, and striving harder each time, I have found that I am able to master the tones. I have found that some of the pronunciations are slightly different than those used by the Vietnamese speakers in my area, but in most cases, they understand me. Sincerely, Erik.
