Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction (16 hours) as MP3 download, plus PDF user's guide and reading booklet

Turkish is a branch of the Turkic language family and is spoken as an official language by about 70 million people in Turkey and in Northern Cyprus. Pimsleur's Turkish teaches standard Turkish, which is based on the dialect spoken in and around Istanbul.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Turkish Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading Turkish. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

This is the best introductory course for Turkish. It is so easy, having no written materials and all. It focuses on the speaking of the language and that is what matters. It has become my starting point for learning Turkish. My only complaint is that there are only 30 lessons while other languages have 90 or more.

This course really got very good speakers. In particular, I liked the fact that in later lessons, you got instructions directly in Turkish (discernible by the older dude with his hoarse, smoky voice).
However, as a young man traveling to the country, I would seriously wonder if I'd ever ask someone for his/her number of children; nor would I care about a fiancé(e) when I'm traveling all on my own. So this course is ideal for businessmen eating in not-too-cheap restaurants who spend a weekend or more in Turkey, but may need some improvement to suit a young man or woman in casual conversation, which is near-zero in this course. There's the formal 'you' everywhere, which is hardly ever used amongst people in their twenties or thirties.

I like the ease of use, the 10 sec rewind, and that the lessons just flow along. On a scale of 1 - 10 (high) I rate this an 8.

Comments about Turkish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Turkish is a fascinating language. Very much different from English, yet so easy to learn and so logical. It's refreshing and fun.
And, moreover, it's very useful when travelling to Turkey. I made good use of what I learned here, in Turkey, at the airport, in restaurants, when shopping and generally talking to people. Made new friendships with people who don't even speak any English at all. And I got constantly complimented on my knowledge of the language.
Now I only wish there were more lessons available from Pimsleur. I badly need to continue learning this amazing language.
My method was listening to the lessons everyday in my car while commuting to work. It worked perfectly for me.

Service and delivery comments:

The only improvement needed is more, more, more Turkish.

Comments about Turkish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I'm using the product to learn Turkish for an upcoming trip (as a tourist) to Turkey. I'd like to be able to communicate with people in the hotel, stores, and restaurants. This program gives a basic knowledge of Turkish and really helps with pronunciation.

I'm finding Turkish more difficult than other languages I have studied, so I spend more time on each lesson (typically an hour a day, 3 lessons/week).

I also go back and review after about half way through.

Service and delivery comments:

Please make Phase II and Phase III levels of Turkish available!! I know when I've finished with Phase I that I will want more!!!

Comments about Turkish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Very good. I like the way they break things down in syllables to help you learn how to pronounce the words and repeat and repeat some more. I'm about half way through the lessons but I think I've learn quite a bit for 30 to 60 minutes a day for two weeks.

Comments about Turkish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

As someone who struggled to learn French and German in high school and college, I had always thought I simply didn't have the aptitude to learn a foreign language.

An upcoming trip to Turkey - and an online ad from Pimsleur - intrigued me about diving into an even more difficult language. I'm almost done with the 30 lesson course and my Istanbul trip is around the corner. I am hopeful I will be able to interact on a basic level at hotels, restaurants and while shopping.

Hearing a native-speaker converse on a daily basis in a language I have not heard previously was a huge plus.
