About Swedish

  • Swedish is an Indo-European language that belongs to the North Germanic branch of the Germanic languages, all of which derive from Old Norse.
  • This course teaches rikssvenska (sometimes referred to as Standard Swedish) as spoken in and around the capital region of Stockholm.
  • Swedish is spoken by approximately 10 million people, mostly in Sweden and parts of Finland.
  • Norwegian and Swedish are considered mutually intelligible, with Danish also being very similar.
  • The Swedish alphabet uses the 26 Latin letters, plus three additional: Å / å, Ä / ä, and Ö / ö.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Swedish Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons. This course replaces our original Compact Swedish with new and expanded vocabulary, scenarios, grammar and structures.
  •  In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included starting at the end of Unit 11 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Swedish alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

I bought this comprehensive Swedish set because I want to continue to improve my Swedish. I have family in Sweden and learned a little Swedish as a kid. As an adult, I've taught myself through books, tapes and computer programs and consider myself somewhat conversational, but limited to certain subjects. This method is BY FAR the best way for me to learn a language. I use it when I am driving in my car. I can tell that my brain is making connections and I am able to create new sentences when prompted to think about how I would say something that the lesson has not yet gone over. The constant review of vocabulary is so valuable. Even in unit #1 I learned a few words that I did not know. My grammar is also improving. I also like that when you learn words, you understand exactly what you are saying. Some programs have you memorize a sentence without really knowing what it exactly translates into. That's just memorizing. Pimsleur is understanding and making the right connections. I find that with using it in the car, I am more motivated rather than getting on the computer to learn. I work on a computer during the day for work. What's not so great? The only thing for me is I wish it moved a bit faster, but I truly believe that the pace the lessons go at are due to how the brain learns best. This product is perfect for beginners too. I'm anxious to let my family members learn from it too. I plan to learn other languages with this method as well. I've already started with the first eight lessons of Japanese.

I bought this after my excellent experience with the Farsi Pimsleur course. I have gone through half of the lessons and am not as happy with it as I was with the Farsi course.

There is a lack of enunciation in the later courses which makes it very difficult to understand what the teachers are saying. I understand that the Swedish language is very fast paced, but I think it would be better to spend some time on enunciation for us beginners.

If I did not have someone I know that speaks Swedish, whom I use to check my pronunciation, I would call this course very ineffective as that person has said repeatedly that my pronunciation is off.

Comments about Swedish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I used Pimsleur Swedish once a day for 25 minutes as the course suggests, and found this is a perfect amount of time where I was able to stay alert and absorb the well planned courses. Having used many other courses some free, some very expensive I found this to be the most well balanced and effective course yet. It was a pleasure to use and immediately rewarding with what seemed little effort. I will out line to anyone considering Pimsleur that as good as the courses are, it does require the listener to make a fair effort and dedicate the time required. This may sound easy but you must mentally prepare yourself for the long haul and be passionate about the language you choose. Let pimsleur do the rest and you WILL learn that language !
I just wish there was a phase 2 ! Im very disappointed about this but I guess Swedish just isnt in demand. But this was a great start .

Comments about Swedish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Swedish is a difficult language and at 65 years of age, I have to listen to the same lesson multiple times. Pimsleur makes it possible to learn! The only way it could be any better, which probably flies in the face of Pimsleur's theory, is if I could peek at a visual, just to make sure I am hearing correctly.

Comments about Swedish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I listen to each unit a couple of times until I feel comfortable to more on to the next. It is great that the further into the course you go, they surprise you by asking you something you learnt at the beginning. I like that they use native speakers and that your taught to phrase things differently and that it is not just repetition.

Sometimes the speed of what is being taught is a little fast but that doesn't mean you have to rush the course, you can always repeat the unit. Although it isn't encouraged to write things down, some people learn through writing too.

This is the best to start speaking a language for beginner. However, there is not silver bullet to learn a language; one has to try several things.
