About Swedish

• Swedish is an Indo-European language that belongs to the North Germanic branch of the Germanic languages, all of which derive from Old Norse.

• This course teaches rikssvenska (sometimes referred to as Standard Swedish) as spoken in and around the capital region of Stockholm.

• Swedish is spoken by approximately 10 million people, mostly in Sweden and parts of Finland.

• Norwegian and Swedish are considered mutually intelligible, with Danish also being very similar.

• The Swedish alphabet uses the 26 Latin letters, plus three additional: Å / å, Ä / ä, and Ö / ö.

Swedish, Basic

• Ten 30-minute lessons of spoken Swedish language instruction (the first ten Units of Pimsleur's 30-Unit Swedish Comprehensive Program). This course replaces our original Compact Swedish with new and expanded vocabulary, scenarios, grammar and structures.

• Essential grammar and vocabulary that teach you greetings, numbers, how to order food and drinks and to give and ask for directions. Learn to speak with near-native pronunciation.

• No mindless repetition! Converse with native speakers in natural (and useful!) conversations.

• Easy, fast, fun and effective language acquisition.

• Completely Audio - anytime, anywhere. No computer necessary! Unlike expensive software programs which tie learners to a computer, Pimsleur courses are available in CD or mp3 format to meet your needs.

    Comments about Swedish, Basic:

I would pop this in before my classes started and by the end of the lesson I couldn't wait for the next one. For only 30 minutes a day, anyone could find time in their schedule for a lesson.

    Comments about Swedish, Basic:

I love the Pimsleur method. It is so intuitive and interesting. I feel like I'm learning from every phrase. These last few days I've actually made good use of my commute time.

I've tried to self-teach myself in Swedish off and on for a few decades. This basic Pimsleur course really helped me fill in the gaps. I really feel like I could fly to Sweden tomorrow and continue my learning with ease.

Like the other reviewers, however, I'm very disappointed to find no Level II and III. I will search for other avenues over the internet, but if the next levels were available I would purchase right away.

Hint to other learners: Just purchase the entire 30 lesson MP3 set. Don't bother buying a few lessons at a time like I did. You'll progress so fast you'll be buying lessons every week.

Lycka till och ha du bra!

    Comments about Swedish, Basic:

This is my first time purchasing from Pimsleur.
I was debating over this or Rosetta Stone. A friend raved about the Pimsleur method and how much more effective it was compared to the latter. After trying it out, I fell in love.

My husband grew up in southern Sweden and is fluent in Swedish. He was very impressed at how well I was able to pronounce and carry out a basic conversation. Pimsleur produces fast results if you're consistent and practice daily.

The only trouble I have when it comes to Swedish is knowing where to put the accent. This version places more emphasis on the Stockholm accent, which is I believe the default that many programs teach Swedish in. I'm trying to learn the southern accent, so I rely on my husband for that. It would be neat if Pimsleur came out with different dialects, but I'm not complaining. Swedish isn't a super popular language that people clamour to learn.

To save money, I bought the mp3 version, downloaded it, and burned it onto CDs. I have a 30-minute drive everyday to work and so I just pop in a CD and listen to the daily unit. I repeat on the way back home.

It's so easy and convenient, it's worth every penny. Learning a new language is an investment, requiring time, money, and diligence. Pimsleur will take the stress out of all three. I don't recommend it if you want to learn how to read and write, since Pimsleur is based solely on audio learning. However, I highly recommend this product to anyone who wants to learn conversation quickly and effectively.

My husband is a huge linguaphile as well as an admirer of many cultures. We plan on traveling a lot once we get a little nest egg going. We want our future kids to be exposed to people, places, and languages from all across the globe. If we want them to be able to communicate with us and other people, we better know the languages and we better know them well. Why not start now? He's so impressed with my progress, he plans on buying Vietnamese I so that he can talk to me :)

My only complaint: Where's Swedish II and III?!

      Comments about Swedish, Basic:

Learning Swedish is a (bit odd) hobby of mine, so I bought lessons 1-30 (e-version).

I am currently at lesson 24 and will soon complete the course of first 30 lessons of Swedish Basic. Without any exaggeration I can honestly say, Pimsleur has THE best method to learn languages, I have experienced to date (and I have experienced some). Learning a language this way is as easy and painless as it gets.

It's a shame though there isn't a sequel to it. I would love to buy lessons 31-60, but they just aren't there. It looks to me I'll have to settle for more conventional courses to continue to learn Swedish, which will undoubtedly slow my progress down. Pitty.
