I've used 3 other well known methods and a private tutor from Latin America on Skype. Pimsleur has been the most effective by far. The way that different conjugations are introduced a little at a time and then used in many different sentences enables you to remember them. Not like how I learned (or didn't learn) Spanish in high school - learn a verb, then try to memorize how conjugate it 12 ways. I listen to the lessons when I'm walking or exercising, traveling - even commuting, even though I might look a little funny as I move my lips to repeat the phrases. My only complaint - I'm on Course IV and want Pimsleur to continue with a course V so I can progress even further. Their product and method are so far superior to software programs or podcasts - I highly recommend them to my friends. Other companies have better marketing, but Pimsleur has a better product.

I have been visiting spanish-speaking countries for about 40 years now. Also, it is useful to speak/understand spanish more-and-more at home as time goes on.
I have gone through Pimsleur Lessons 1 thru' 4 and felt that #4 could have done a better job of not only introducing new stuff, but reminding one of everything learned before. There are times when it seems the speakers spend many minutes on some inane exchange. The lessons could vary a bit more.
I actually would be interested in Lesson 5 but don't think there is such a thing -- especially if I could get the "frequent customer discount".

Comments about Spanish Phase 4, Units 1-30:

Practicing for just thirty minutes a day and proceeding from one lesson to the next when you feel ready makes learning easy. It's a great way to keep your mind engaged when doing household chores. Around Phase 2, I started to develop a feel for the grammar and how everything works together. The way lessons are structured (both anticipating and repeating after the speaker) has me automatically translating in my head during my day to day life. For learning to speak and listen to a language, no system is better.

Reading and writing, on the other hand, feel tacked on. There's no direction on when to do the lessons and they don't have the built in repetition that makes the spoken language learning so easy. You get a lot of vocabulary in the reading lessons, but it's easy to forget without rote memorization, which is lame.

Also, the lessons focus on very specific function words so you're left with very little extra vocabulary on specific topics. The exception to that is for business and travel vocabulary, which is the program's focus. If you have a specific interest, you need to do outside study to gain the vocabulary for that subject, but you will have an amazing foundation.

In short, Pimsleur gives you an excellent foundation from which you continue to learn about the vocabulary that interests you the most. You will start learning correct pronunciation from day one and develop an intuition for the language's grammar and rhythm.

Service and delivery comments:

I would integrate the reading component in with the spoken lessons. For example, every five spoken lessons have the person do a reading lesson and then continue to follow up that vocabulary during the spoken lessons.

Also, don't was our time teaching us cognates like "programador de software". We learn so little non-functional vocabulary, make what we do learn different and interesting.

Comments about Spanish Phase 4, Units 1-30:

I have gone through Spanish I, II, and III and now I am starting with Spanish IV. I really have enjoyed Pimsleur. I have the lessons downloaded to my phone and the app is super easy to use. It is portable, convenient and I am able to listen even when I only have 5 minutes.
