I have tried Rocket Spanish, Rosetta Stone and Study Spanish in my quest to learn the Spanish language. I've also taken classes. My biggest problem was to actually understand a conversation. I had all the grammar basics, but just couldn't put it together. No one seems to teach Spanish, the way we learned English as children. I have found that Pimsleur is the best resource for understanding Spanish. The constant repetition in each of the lessons has helped me immensely. I only bought Phases 1 and 2 because I wasn't sure if this system would work, but I look forward to buying the rest of it in the near future.

the lessons start off well but soon the overall problem of the approach becomes evident: it is not obvious how the spoken word is in writing i.e. a written compendium is essential to include. Also the conjugation of verbs should be explained, while they are being used. The P-approach may be useful for those who do not understand the structure of languages and learn them by just listening to them. Also th ereading book is useless as it lacks any explanations or translations.

      Comments about Spanish Phases 1-2:

I'd gotten a previous CD version from Pimsleur of another language, and realized the value of the program and teaching strategy, but CDs got lost and scratched. This time, using the mp3 version and the app on my phone has been so much more valuable, primarily because it is portable and always with me - I've been able to work through the lessons in the car, or while working outside, etc. so I've been able to keep up better. Additionally, the app interface keeps track of my progress and allows easy pausing and picking up of the program. Highly reccommended!

          Comments about Spanish Phases 1-2:

If your goal is to begin to speak and understand the spoken foreign language almost as automatically as a child does, Pimselur is brilliantly crafted, never mind the plain brown wrapper. If your goal is translating the written language into written English, then maybe the grammars and dictionaries I learned from years back would be OK. Trouble was, I couldn't speak even rudimentary survival Spanish to save myself -- even though I could decode a newspaper article into English in an hour or two. "Knowing" vocabulary and rules didn't allow me to speak. The Pimsleur method does -- just as claimed. It feels more like getting the knack of riding a bicycle or swimming -- minus the fear, because the guidance is at once shrewd and almost invisible. Bravo!

          Service and delivery comments:

I would buy supplemental audio or video dialogs (in the target language) for every 5 lessons (using same vocabulary and structures) that show how many permutations there can be of what you just learned.

I'm glad Pimsleur in my course has resisted the understandable clamor for written materials. My experience is that when I see writing in the alphabet I know, my brain automatically switches to English, my ears go deaf, and my mouth goes back to English sounds or mute -- that is, I stop learning the new system and revert to English (Spanglish, Germanglish, Japanglish) Maybe you could offer a license-to-read (and materials to read) AFTER a student can pass a pronunciation test in the language. :-)

            Comments about Spanish Phases 1-2:

Product seems OK as I'm just brushing up. However, it is the only app on my device that will not play through my Mazda's audio. I only bought this expensive app to listen to in the car, and instead I have to listen to it through the iPhone speaker, which is not ideal.

The lessons instruct you to say norte americano indicating you are from the United States. Mexicans and Canadians are also North American and estadounidense would be more accurate and sensitive.
