Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction on 16 CDs, plus a reading booklet

Spanish is the official language of Spain and 21 Latin American countries, and is an official language of the U.N. Pimsleur's Spanish teaches an educated Latin American Spanish, with speakers from Colombia and Argentina in levels I-III, and from Mexico in level IV.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Spanish I, Comprehensive includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with nearnative pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading Spanish. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

I had two years of Spanish in high school more than 50 years ago. I received high marks, although I never was able to engage in the most basic conversation. Years later, when I realized how rewarding it would be to speak a second language, I tried to take up where I left off. It didn't work. In fact, I have tried everything possible to regain my limited proficiency without success. I studied books, videos, vocabularies, verb conjugations, flash cards, you name it. None of these tools worked for me.

I had to swallow a lot of pride, but I finally decided that the only way I was going to really learn Spanish was to start over and learn the way my grandchildren are learning English. I am now on lesson 28 in the Pimsleur program and it's working for me.

I am using an MP3 player and I can stop it whenever I want to "think through" and answer before the voice tells me the answer. I can repeat a lesson as often as necessary to really learn the material too. Some lessons are more difficult than others, but I can usually move on to the next lesson after repeating a lesson three to six times. I do all of this in the privacy of my car or on a leisurely walk without the embarrassment of other people watching or listening and commenting on my mistakes.

My criticisms of the program are few. I believe they could do a better job of timing the length of the pauses following the instructions. Sometimes there is not enough time to say an entire phrase and sometimes you could say it three or four times before the next instruction. Another challenge is listening to instructions in Spanish. Listening skills are just as important as speaking skills, so I appreciate the process, but sometimes the Spanish instructions use vocabulary that has not been taught yet. I also think it would be good to have a basic grammar text to supplement the other reading materials.

The bottom line is this: I am a very satisfied customer. I am already dreaming of my next trip to a Latin American country where I can try out my newly acquired skills.

I am right in the middle of Latin America Spanish. Finding it very difficult to keep up. Maybe some of it is soaking in , in some mysterious way. Always thought that I was above average in intelligence, but now not sure.
I am traveling to a South American country in about a month. Not a big English speaking country so I wanted to get some of the basics. Also want to use it as a volunteer with a well known humanitarian/ disaster relief organization.
My concern about Pimsleur is that once one gets frustrated , its hard to get feedback. After 15 sessions, I went back and reviewed the previous 14. Now I hope I am on track to do a lot better and am able to use what I learned.

Comments about Spanish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Best use of this program is car stereo CDs. I play each lesson over as many times as needed while driving. (one a day). The shortness of the lessons makes learning easier and familiar.
Studying at home has too many distractions; thus the conditions of the car are perfect.

Comments about Spanish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I thoroughly enjoy your product. However, I have a problem with my computer when I attempt to utilize the course manager. Your technical staff has been very helpful in this regard, but the course manager does not function properly. Your staff has worked with me to put the course lessons on as .zip files, which I can access and use. I believe the problem is something within my computer. However, I do plan on extending my Spanish learning by purchasing Phase 2, and possible Phase 3, in the future.

Wish the phrase book matched the units. Started my own, and use the phrase book to reinforce spelling. Material is in the phrase book, have to hunt the vocabulary down.

Comments about Spanish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I have the MP3 version of Spanish lessons. I haven't been real disciplined to have scheduled study times. But I'm enjoying the lessons and retaining what I've studied. It would be helpful for me if there was a book so I could see the words as I speak them. I know it's more important to hear how the words sound for inflection, etc. but if I could hear and see at the same time, it would be easier for me to learn.
