Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction (16 hours) as MP3 download, plus PDF user's guide and reading booklet

Russian is the official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Krygystan. Pimsleur's Russian uses speakers from Moscow and St. Petersburg, which accounts for slight pronunciation differences between speakers, but accurately depicts contemporary spoken Russian.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Russian Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with nearnative pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Russian alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with Russian pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

I have to say that I am absolutely amazed at how much russian I accumulated over the course of this program. The level 1 program builds a very solid foundation of the language. I went from barely even being able to say "hello", to being confident and able to communicate many things in a variety of topics. In my opinion, this program is better than taking a 101 class.

It allowed me to develop my speaking abilities without an accent to an amazing extent. It also gave me the flexibility to study on my own time and at my own pace. I personally went through the program at a slower and more thorough rate. I really wanted to be sure that I was able to sink in everything I was learning and to maintain it long-term.

The reading lessons familiarize you with the alphabet as well as teach you how to pronounce them in combinations using a variety of words. At first, learning all of this looked overwhelming. I spent a fair amount of time writing out letters of the alphabet and pronouncing the sounds of the letters as I did so. Now I am able to pronounce (and understand if its part of my existing vocabulary) just about any word that I read in russian.

Of course, the program only works as well as the user does. If you commit and do the work you will find that there is a lot of value to be gained. I am ready to move on to level 2 and I can't help but be excited to see how much further it takes me. Without taking any classes, Pimsleur is hands down the best learning program out there. It is fun to use as well. It often times feels more like a game than work. I would not have been so enthusiastic about learning russian if it were not for Pimsleur.

Comments about Russian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I've tried all the major language learning programs and this the only one I will continue to use. I have used it for Japanese and now Russian. The best part is after only a few weeks I'm getting compliments from friends fluent in Russian and Japanese on how quickly I'm learning and on how well my accent is coming along. I wish more languages, like Russian, had a fourth level and hopefully that is in the works. I suggest thi program to all my friends and it's the only one I'm willing to pay these prices for. The only negative is slowing my progress waiting to save the money for new levels. Anyone interested in learning a foreign language should give the introductory levels a try, it's worth the time and money.

Comments about Russian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I have dabbled in several languages over the years, some more than others. For 2013 I decided to learn Russian and checked out a number of courses. Pimsleur is a stand out favourite.

I love the way I can plug in my ear-buds, jump on my bike for my morning commute and learn Russian on the way. It has taken me most of 2013 to cover the first course because like a lot of others I keep repeating a unit until I am confident about it. I am about to buy the second level course for 2014.

I have learned languages in formal and informal settings and at high school and university level and I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending these Pimsleur course for anyone, for any language. They really are that good.

All it takes is consistently listening to the tapes. If you can do that - you can speak Russian with Pimsleur.

I agree with some of the comments about Russian pronunciation - it is unique! Esp. the "T" versus "K" versus 'D" question. I have found that using google translate to check the spelling of words is very useful where the ear cannot quite pick up what the speaker might be saying.

Comments about Russian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I bought this program to get myself prepared for a russian flagship program and out of curiosity of whether I could learn what's considered to be a very difficult language on my own. So far so great. I'm only on lesson 12 because I personally like to repeat the lessons until I have about 90% of the previous lesson down. I am amazed at how well I am able to remember all that I have learned to this point. I listen to lessons when working out, on my way to and from school, during breaks, and I go through them at least twice at home so I can recite aloud. I also listen to Russian talk radio and music and try to listen for the words and phrases that I've learned and then define them. It helps me with memory. Because I am so submerged on a daily bases, I do take a day off and rest in an effort to avoid burnout. This is the best language learning program the I have come across. It motivating to continually see progress being made. It is easy to follow along with and you can go at your own pace. Some of the pronunciations are a little difficult to get but if you look up the word you can easily clarify if that was a certain sound verses another. Overall, fantastic program!

Comments about Russian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I recently moved to Moscow for a busy job so can only squeeze in lessons a couple of times each week. The Pimsleur series makes it easy to fill in language instruction on a daily basis, around my schedule. I find the lessons to be easy..just listen and repeat. Can't get it? Do that one over until I do. It has also helped me progress faster with my Russian tutor and helped my pronunciation. Great tool...thanks!
