Pimsleur covers the world of languages. You can choose from over 50 languages, many with multiple levels, ranging from the most popular to the exotic. Become a Pimsleur learner and travel the world!
Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction on 16 CDs, plus a reading booklet
Russian is the official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Krygystan. Pimsleur's Russian uses speakers from Moscow and St. Petersburg, which accounts for slight pronunciation differences between speakers, but accurately depicts contemporary spoken Russian.
Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Russian alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with Russian pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Russian Phase 1, Units 1-30:
I have to say that I am absolutely amazed at how much russian I accumulated over the course of this program. The level 1 program builds a very solid foundation of the language. I went from barely even being able to say "hello", to being confident and able to communicate many things in a variety of topics. In my opinion, this program is better than taking a 101 class.
It allowed me to develop my speaking abilities without an accent to an amazing extent. It also gave me the flexibility to study on my own time and at my own pace. I personally went through the program at a slower and more thorough rate. I really wanted to be sure that I was able to sink in everything I was learning and to maintain it long-term.
The reading lessons familiarize you with the alphabet as well as teach you how to pronounce them in combinations using a variety of words. At first, learning all of this looked overwhelming. I spent a fair amount of time writing out letters of the alphabet and pronouncing the sounds of the letters as I did so. Now I am able to pronounce (and understand if its part of my existing vocabulary) just about any word that I read in russian.
Of course, the program only works as well as the user does. If you commit and do the work you will find that there is a lot of value to be gained. I am ready to move on to level 2 and I can't help but be excited to see how much further it takes me. Without taking any classes, Pimsleur is hands down the best learning program out there. It is fun to use as well. It often times feels more like a game than work. I would not have been so enthusiastic about learning russian if it were not for Pimsleur.
