Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction on 16 CDs, plus a reading booklet

Russian is the official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Krygystan. Pimsleur's Russian uses speakers from Moscow and St. Petersburg, which accounts for slight pronunciation differences between speakers, but accurately depicts contemporary spoken Russian.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Russian I, Comprehensive includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with nearnative pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Russian alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with Russian pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Russian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I put the MP3 files on my iphone and I listen to them in the car while on my hour long commute to work. I'm only on lesson 12 because I won't allow myself to progress to the next lesson until I feel I have at least answered 80% of the prompts correctly. I really feel that I have learned a lot thus far. I hope to eventually complete the full three sets of 30 lessons. I've tried only 3 of the reading lessons. I wish the reading lessons reviewed some of the words I'm learning in the audio lessons. On one of the audio lessons, I had to ask my Russian friend how to say the word for 'then' because the speaker on the audio didn't clarify that it was a 't' sound rather than a 'k' sound. They sounded virtually identical. It's supposed to be 'tak da' not 'kak da'. Spelled in cyrillic of course! ;) Having learned and become fluent in Spanish by writing and reading at the same time as learning the spoken word, I'm missing that part in this course; however, I'm trusting the approach at this point. Otherwise, everything has been really great.
Thanks!
Erinn

    Comments about Russian I, Comprehensive:

I use it to become familiar with another language. It's great for attaining the linguistics of the language. By building upon phrases and key words, it feels like a first language. High school language learning doesn't work as well because it doesn't etch grammar and dialogue into your mind. I really feel comfortable speaking. I think the only drawback it that some foreign accents and sounds are difficult to comprehend. I wish I could physically see those difficult sounds as they were being said. For instance: the Russian shch. All in all, this product really works.

Comments about Russian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I drive a semi and have lots of time to myself, started this program out of boredom, but after my 3rd lesson I was hooked. Im almost finished with unit 1 and im already farther along than I was after 2 years of Japanese in high school its so easy. I will definitely continue to learn Russian with this program. There is no reason you cant learn a language during your commute.
