About the Punjabi Language
- Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language of the Indo-European language family. It is unique for being the only tonal language in this family.
- There are ten Punjabi dialects which are mostly mutually intelligible. This course teaches the Eastern Punjabi dialect as spoken in India.
- Punjabi is spoken by approximately 110-112 million people world-wide.
- It is an official language in the Indian states of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, and is also spoken elsewhere in northwestern India. Although not considered an offical language in Pakistan, it is spoken by the majority in the Pakistani province of Punjab.
- It is also spoken by expatriate communities in Bangladesh, Canada, Fiji, Kenya, Libya, Malaysia (Peninsular), Mauritius, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and the United States. In Canada, Punjabi is thought to be the sixth most frequently spoken language.
- Punjabi is most commonly written using the Gurmukhi script. The reading lessons in this course teach how to read the Gurmukhi alphabet.
The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Punjabi Phase 1, Units 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.
In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.
Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to give you further practice in reading Punjabi using the Gurmukhi script. You'll be reading words, phrases, and short sentences using familiar vocabulary as well as new vocabulary. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included.

Comments about Punjabi Phase 1, Units 1-30:
The cd's are heard no visual aids but this actually helps you think about the words in your mind and so you learn quicker, it is a great product b/c it is interactive and slows down then speeds up which allows you to learn and then challenge yourself. What isn't great is that there is only phase 1 of 30 lessons I want to continue to learn but they have to add more to the program ! They need a demand, so start buying people you won't regret it !

Comments about Punjabi Phase 1, Units 1-30:
This is the second language I am learning (apart from my native English) and I find this method to be less effort than the 6 years of classes I took to learn Spanish. (Although I am sure having been through a language-learning process before makes this second experience easier)
Some pros include: portability, use of full sentences in later lessons (unlike another very popular language leaning method I have tried in the past to learn Hindi), consideration and explaination of Muslim vs. Sikh vs. Hindu greetings and sayings for those who might not be familiar
Cons: (and this is only a person con, it wouldn't necessarily be a con for someone who is traveling) it is very much geared towards travelers, with many lessons focusing on asking for directions, asking if people speak English, etc. Those learning for work or communication with family/friends can use this as a great starting point, but we will eventually need to learn more applicable phrases.
Service and delivery comments:
I hope a 2nd version is created! Or a version focusing on communicating in business or personal conversations is created.

Comments about Punjabi Phase 1, Units 1-30:
I speak several languages all thanks to Pimsleur. Seriously, I have about 13 or 14 different language courses and at least 20 books on each language that I try to learn. Nothing....Nothing even comes close to Pimsleur's method. You will know and fully understand several sentences after just one 30 minute lesson and you will not forget them. I have actually stopped buying new programs now, only Pimsleur. Just try it yourself and see how easy and different it is from anything else you have ever tried......listed to one of the free Lesson 1 for any language you like. After 30 minutes, you will feel 50x more confident in your ability to pronounce the words like a native speaker. Don't believe me, just try it!

Comments about Punjabi Phase 1, Units 1-30:
I use this product a few times a week, I find it hard to commit to half-an-hour everyday but I'm slowly making progress. I've so far repeated each lesson 2-4 times to make sure I understand at least 80% before I move on- as is suggested.
I love this product because I am REALLY learning and REALLY remembering! Others and myself are impressed by how much I learn in each lesson once I've mastered it.
It is also great because it offers more languages than any other language learning program I have seen! Pimsleur is the only program that teaches Punjabi that I have found. I'm happy that I can finally learn Punjabi to converse with my significant other in his native language and with my future family-in-law!
