Comments about Portuguese (Brazilian) Phases 1-3:

While I haven't used Edition 2 - Brazilian Portuguese 1 - 3, only Edition 3 - Level 1, I have full Pimsleur courses of other Edition 2 Pimsleur courses, and comparing them to E3 - Brazil. Port. - Level 1, this new course design is a HUGE improvement. You get a FULL 30 - 32 minutes per lesson, and now the reading lessons are each a separate track after each lesson (beginning after lesson 11). You still get all the reading lessons together on a separate disc. Also, there seems to now be a slightly shorter pause after the speaker to make the translation (you can always press pause), but the breakdown, syllable by syllable, of new words seems more clear, and recently learned words are broken down the same way, to make them even clearer. So, Simon and Schuster, PLEASE publish A 3rd Edition for Brazil. Port. Levels 2 and 3 - this year...PLEASE?!?

Really enjoyed how instinctual the method is. If all foreign languages were taught this way in the USA, we'd be better off.

I think it is really good so far, it teaches the basics of the language and the pronunciation is really nice! But please create phase 4!

Comments about Port (Braz) Phases 1-3:

I use it everyday when on my walk. And I compare the value based on:

      1) The price of other programs.
      2) The value of other programs.
      3) The way Pimsleur programs have worked for me in the past.
      4) The completeness

The price was higher than most other programs. I have Michel Thomas and Rosetta Stone. I still bought this one because I felt it's great for pronunciation.

In the past, Pimsleur programs were different because they went "backwards". When introducing a new word, the teacher would pronounce the word backwards. E.g. wards, ck, bah (would make "backwards"). This is great to get the exact sound. As the program advances, this unique method is dropped. The other part is that the written text (PDF) doesn't correspond to the lesson learned. Why, I'm not sure. It would be so much better to learn something and then read it in the text.

I'm half way through the 30 lessons (and I've learned a lot). Whether I'll speak fluently by the time I get to 30, I'm not sure. I'll only know once I'm done. I've been studying this every day, six days a week, so I'm pretty diligent, but let's see at the end. As compared with any live learning I've done in the past, I'd say this is good value. I think it gives you a very solid foundation and I wouldn't hesitate to buy their products again. I would, however, look at how it can be improved (based on suggestions) and yes, improve it.

It could also be a little bit funny. It's far, far too serious.

Comments about Port (Braz) Phases 1-3:

I have learned Mexican Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Egyptian Arabic through the Pimsleur audio system. The audio system has been the essential ingredient in my ability to learn other languages. The audio approach has been referred to as "boring" and "not effective" but I am sure these epithets come from users with unrealistic expectations. Learning another language as an adult American is a monumental task. Having the Pimsleur audio system to listen to again and again (e.g., when walking to work, at the gym, at home doing dishes) is like having a patient bilingual friend constantly repeating to you the correct pronunciation of common words and phrases. The phrases superfically might seem boring or funny but they force the listener to get used to responding with common words and word combintation that can be put together in other combinations the more the listener learns and becomes familiar with hearing the language. Reading the words and learning conjugations after becoming familiar with the spoken word is so much easier. The Pimsleur audio system allows American adults an effective entry into learning a new language, which would be difficult to get otherwise (and this audio system is certainly more effective than just the classroom reading and grammatical approach).
