Description
Includes 30 lessons and culture notes on 16 CDs, plus a culture notes booklet
This course teaches Mandarin, also known as Standard Chinese. Mandarin is the official spoken language in Mainland China and Taiwan. It is also widely spoken in Singapore and Malaysia, and it is one of the five official languages of the UN. Mandarin is used in Chinese schools, colleges, universities, and in the media. Learn Mandarin Chinese today with Pimsleur.
Comprehensive Mandarin Chinese I includes 30 lessons of essential grammar and vocabulary -- 16 hours of real-life spoken practice sessions -- plus a Culture Booklet. Upon completion of this Level I program, you will have functional spoken proficiency with the most-frequently-used vocabulary and grammatical structures.
- In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
- In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
- In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. More directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family.
One hour of recorded Cultural Notes are included at the end of Unit 30. These notes are designed to provide you with some insight into Chinese culture. A Notes Booklet is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 1, Units 1-30:
I've found the beginner course great. I listen to the lessons twice and am able to move on. I've been able to start using the language I've learned immediately. I find the system of listening and repeating really effective for me. Much better than other programs I've tried.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 1, Units 1-30:
I love that once I downloaded the lessons I copied them to CD's, listen to them on my computer, in my car and I also on my iPod so there's total mobility anytime-anywhere. The tutors are very clear in pronunciation and tone...I like the way they start with the end of a word and work toward the beginning helping us to really 'hear' the word. One thing I wish they would add is the correct spelling of the word in Pin-Yin.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 1, Units 1-30:
The Pimsleur method is great.
I am a teacher of Italian to foreigners, and can say that from a professional point of view.
The only aspect that today's applied linguistics would change, is contrasting similar sounding words, with different meaning: that is a good way to confuse them. Vocabulary should be presented not on this basis, but rather in semantic families. All the rest is perfect. Wonderful work as to memorization.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 1, Units 1-30:
I used this on a short notice trip for work. I ended up staying in China for 3 weeks and used this in the morning and the evening as it usually took two times for a lesson to sink in. I had no previous experience with Mandarin and this helped me to be able to have at least some idea what was being said around me in a short amount of time. At the very least it reduced my stress level about being in a foreign country for so long and I really appreciated that little confidence boost.

Comments about Chinese (Man) Phase 1, Units 1-30:
Makes that difficult a language to learn, such as mandarin, natural and familiar in a short time.
