Lithuanian is spoken by some 3 million native speakers in Lithuania and about 170,000 abroad. There are two main dialects: Aukštaiciu (Highland Lithuanian) and Žemaiciu/Žemaitiu (Lowland Lithuanian). Pimsleur's Lithuanian teaches the standard dialect, based on West High Lithuanian.

This Compact course provides an introduction to Lithuanian with ten thirty-minute lessons of spoken language practice. With this product you start from zero, learning first survival phrases and vocabulary, then progressing to speaking and understanding at a functional level. Every lesson contains an introductory conversation, and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice for all vocabulary introduced. Emphasis on pronunciation and comprehension. At the completion of this course, you’ll have a basic vocabulary and speak with a near-native accent. This course provides you with a solid foundation upon which to expand your language skills. These units also include Reading Lessons to provide you with an introduction to reading Lithuanian. Reading Lessons are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. I started dating a girl from Lithuania while she was in the US for the summer. I wanted to show off by learning some of her language. I had a half hour commute to work so the lessons fit into that time nicely. The first lesson kicked my butt. I had to repeat it 4-5 times before I got 90% of the review words right. Just talk out loud while driving alone and repeat everything over and over again. It got better with the other lessons and after two weeks I walked up to her and asked her in Lithuanian how she was doing. I freaked her out because I had no accent. I keep waiting for advanced lessons to be released. We've been married for 8 years and the most words I've learned was from this first set. It's really just a hundred words or so. Just enough to survive. I want to speak the language. Keep making more.
