Description

Includes 30 lessons and culture notes on 16 CDs, plus a culture notes booklet

Japanese is spoken by about 130 million people, 122 million of whom are in Japan. There are also speakers in the Ryukyu Islands, Korea, Taiwan, parts of the United States, and Brazil. Pimsleur's Japanese teaches a polite level of Japanese, which is appropriate for use in most situations in Japan.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Japanese Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of Culture Notes in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information or preferences, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with nearnative pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to really participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more and more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. You can talk about your immediate family, go on a car trip, and ask for and understand directions. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening and traveling with children. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

One hour of recorded Cultural Notes are included at the end of Unit 30. These Notes are designed to provide you with some insight into Japanese culture. A Culture Notes booklet is also included in PDF format.

My short review: If you're traveling to another country and need to know the language, start with Pimsleur. It's the only thing I've tried that makes you feel confident having a conversation in another language rather than just teaching you vocabulary.

My longer review:
I'm about to embark on a 6 month trip to Japan and I've been trying to learn Japanese for the last year. The first 6-8 months I was using another very popular language software and when that didn't work out, I switched to learning from textbooks and online videos. I felt like I was making decent progress but as the time to leave for Japan grew near, I started to panic because I realized I only knew vocabulary and couldn't even hold a basic conversation. Someone recommended Pimsleur to me and I was apprehensive at first since I am not a very strong listener. I'm so glad I listened to them! I'm only 6 lessons in but I feel like what I've learned so far is more useful than everything I learned in the previous year. I only wish I had started with Pimsleur. Thank you!

Affordable and effective, it worked well for me in getting me up to speed quickly in conversation and helped me be on track during regular Japanese class. The convenience and pricing of the downloaded version is very attractive with one major draw back: the audio quality is relatively poor. Also, using other material with Pimsleur helps a lot, adult learners are not children and need several pathways to enhance the language learning experience.

Comments about Japanese Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I rehearse with this product everyday for 30 min, and it works very well. I feel though that the booklet that it come with in the digital version is ok. I would rather have a booklet with all the phrases that are being practiced so I can always go back and reference them and study them.

Comments about Japanese Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I used the product during times of day when I have availability. It's been great and very helpful and well-paced. I do wish that the user interface was a bit more modern and cleaner with bigger buttons and better access to the documentation and cultural notes. Otherwise, the content via audio has been great.

Comments about Japanese Phase 1, Units 1-30:

This course is truly amazing. I finished the first level and I can already listen to English audio and I automatically perceive it as English and Japanese at the same time, just like a bilingual person. I already feel like I can participate in any conversation in Japanese. Although, it can be a little fast.

Comments about Japanese Phase 1, Units 1-30:

My husband and I walk every morning for an hour, and we listen to the Pimsleur Japanese while we walk. We have both always wanted to learn another language, Japanese in particular.

Pimsleur Japanese had us conversing in Japanese from the first day, and we use it in our regular conversations a lot. For us, we need to listen to a lesson more than once, until we are comfortable with it. But only once per day, as recommended. We honestly love this approach. We are excited about our continual progression.

Comments about Japanese Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Every morning and afternoon on the way to/from work I listen to my Japanese tracks on my iPod. After 30+ days thus far (I repeated a few lessons) I feel like I have a better grasp of my new language than when I took 4 years of Spanish in school. And Spanish is supposed to be a much easier language to learn. These courses are not perfect and definitely require supplementation (I listen to Japanese movies and music to facilitate my learning). However, for basic understanding of the language, this program has done wonders on me. I find myself naturally conjugating words and phrases and I understand the different usages much easier. I will definitely go on to use this program for all my other language needs. My only issue is that this program is 100% audio, I think it would really benefit learners to have some kind of visual assistance. Other than that, this is a great product!

    Service and delivery comments:

I don't know how, but some kind of visual aid for certain words/phrases/concepts would only bolster the expedited learning process. Supplemental learning material is always needed for learning a new language and even just a nice booklet (or downloadable pdf) with good website and physical sources that can be used would help as well (though I definitely don't think it is Pimsleur's job to do my research as I happily did myself, it would just help).
