Comments about Italian Phase 2, Unit 01-05:
This review is specifically for Pimsleur's Italian Phase 2, units 01-05, but I have bought all the previous units, and plan to buy the remaining as I progress.
I'm in my mid-50s. I don't have any real reason to learn Italian other than just wanting to. I don't know that I'll ever get to Italy. And don't know that I won't -- just that I have no immediate needs for learning Italian.
This Pimsleur program is working great for me. I am also using DuoLingo on-line, watching Italian-language movies on NetFlix and other streaming and on-line sources. I've set my smart-phone language to Italian, and I look at (and sometimes decipher) Italian news stories on-line. Not quite total immersion, which would be the best way to learn, but every little bit helps.
Pimsleur is my primary vocal-learning tool, and probably the best, most concise, learning tool of all that I am currently using. I like the format, bringing in new words while reminding you of words and phrases you've previously learned.
I listen to the Pimsleur courses in the car. My average commute is about 20 minutes, so it is short of the typical 30-minute unit. I listen to the first 20 minutes on the way there, and then back-up a bit and listen to the last 20 minutes on the way home. Pimsleur suggests one unit a day "for best results" and also that you should be at about the 80% mark before moving on.
I find that it works best for me to listen to any given unit 3 or 4 times before I feel comfortable moving on. Again, I have no set time-goal for learning Italian, and I also think I am past the 80% success mark before I move onto the next unit.
Perhaps it's my age, or perhaps I'm just not that good at spoken language. It takes me several times through before I feel comfortable just saying some of the words. But then it really is fun, amazing to me, to find that I can actually start saying words that sound vaguely Italian.
I am making respectable progress, and I recommend this program.
