Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction (16 hours) as MP3 download, plus PDF user's guide and reading booklet

Italian is the official language of Italy and San Marino, and an official language of Switzerland, Croatia, and Slovenia. It is spoken by about 58 million in Italy, 24,000 in San Marino, 840,000 in Switzerland, another million in other European countries, and 5 million in North and South America.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Italian Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with nearnative pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident. In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level.
  • In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included and start at Unit 9 to provide you with an introduction to reading Italian. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

To whom it may concern:

I wanted to write to you and say thank you for the excellent language programs that you provide. I was considered unable to learn a language in High school and struggled with Spanish in college. I first tried your 10 day French program 6 years ago and I still have retained the conversations learned there in. About a month and a half ago I went overseas for the first time to Italy and was very nervous about not knowing the language. I had one month to learn Italian and since I was so confident with the French that I learned from your compnay, I decided to try your Italian program. I was blown away at how easy it was to learn a new language and retain it along with my French. Not only was I was able to understand conversation I was able to speak it and be understood by all the people I came in contact with in Rome. I was able to help my family find directions to places we wanted to go and I was able to order food and drink with ease and by the end of my week there I felt very comfortable with the language so much so that several cab driver mistook me as a local. The French also came in handy when I got lost and I went to ask for directions and I was able to get directions from a French tourist.
The Pimsleur works and I highly recommend it to anyone who is wanting to learn a language and be able to converse in it. I never dreamed that I would be able to speak another language and you have proved that I can! Thank you for this amazing experience and for helping me communicate and become connected with the world around me. I highly recommend Pimsleur languages because it works and it works very well. Have a wonderful day.

Sincerely,

Brandon A. McCluskey

two complaints:
1. the reading material function is questionable. while helpful to see the words and how they are pronounced, there is no translation so you don't know what you are saying. adding a translation would help with building vocabulary.

2. as the responses become more complex, i found that the amount of time given to reply was too short, making for a frustrating experience. i realize that the program tries to increase speed, however, an addtional few seconds would have been more helpful to me. Also, as sentences become more complex, it was harder to understand/hear the pronunciation of the words by the native speakers. yes, they were speaking at the native pace, which is fine and an important goal to reach, but.....there are lessons that what i heard is just one blur of sound and the individual words were harder to distinguish.

i am currently on lesson 14. i have had to revisit lessons multiple times starting at lesson 12 given what i wrote above. this is not a negative criticism of the program, more an exercise in frustration in progress.

all that said, am i learning the language, as of lesson 14...YES.

Comments about Italian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Good product/ Wouldne nice if lessons were typed out for you to go over and see words. Only focuses on formal conversation. But I am enjoying and learning.

Comments about Italian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I have vast experience with teaching languages and I think this in between method is very good, not quite immersion but not classroom style either. Until one learns how to think in the target language (which is not easy); the English prompts are realistic: this is how normal people think when they are learning a language. People are first thinking in their first language and trying to translate at the same time. Repeating key phrases and vocabulary at almost authentic speed is helpful for travelers. Makes a commute seem to go faster.

Comments about Italian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I use both the Croatian and Italian courses on my Droid as I exercise, drive to and from work, or even at the beach. The courses are easy to use, and I never feel "stressed" as I can always go back and review the material at my leisure. The method of teaching is unlike anything I've experienced, and I am speaking Croatian and Italian well enough that at work, native speakers understand me. This is an excellent product and well-priced, too.

Service and delivery comments:

Sometimes, the Droid app has trouble recovering itself when I leave it for a moment to deal with a text message. If I do that, the Pimsleur app stops responding about 50% of the time. It only takes a couple of taps to get it going again, but this is the one con I can think of.

Comments about Italian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I've used Pinmsleur successfully in the days of cassette tapes and audio CDs, so giving the MP3 iPhone app was an easy choice to brush up on my Italian for an upcoming trip to Rome. Pimsleur is very effective; if you follow the program faithfully, you WILL learn the language. Period. The randomization and repetition of words in different contexts, the building-block concept all come together to give you a surprisingly high level of fluency very quickly. I've doubled up on the lessons, doing two a day (since this is a refresher for me) and will now move on to the next level. In 30 days I will have a comfortable level of speaking and understanding Italian for everyday travel and social situations. Pretty amazing.

Comments about Italian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Lessons 1-8 I was breezing along doing pretty well I thought...then I hit lesson 9 and got hung up big time. I have listened to it at least 6 times and I still can't remember most of the next words/phrases. Seems like they added just a little too much at one time for me. Lesson 10 restored my faith and now I'm struggling a bit with lesson 12. I'm plugging along and am still excited for I'm going to Italy in September.
