Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction (16 hours) as MP3 download, plus PDF user's guide and reading booklet

Hungarian is spoken in Hungary and by the Hungarian minorities in 7 neighboring countries. The Hungarian name for the language is Magyar. Pimsleur's Hungarian teaches the "standard" Hungarian, which is based on the North-Eastern dialect spoken throughout Hungary.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Hungarian Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons begin in Unit 11 are also combined at the end to provide you with an introduction to reading the Hungarian alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

      Comments about Hungarian, Comprehensive:

Really great introduction to this very interesting language that is so different from others.
Pronunciation is great and grammar is learned almost as an aside. Really enjoyable learning format, and very effective!
      Looking forward to Levels 2&3!

Comments about Hungarian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

This is my second Pimsleur course where I started from scratch (French being my first). Unlike French, Hungarian is a complex language with a very different sentence structure, yet the Pimsleur course makes it very intuitive and understandable. By the time you reach Lesson 30, you will have a good working vocabulary and a basic understanding of Hungarian grammar. This is true even if you start Lesson 1 not knowing a word of Hungarian!

I have Hungarian roots and feel it's important to have at least a working knowledge of the language. It has already come in handy in my travels. Now I'm just chomping at the bit for Level 2!

For half-hour long commutes, this is a perfect way to pass the time. Or just break up a lesson into two if that works better for you.

        More lessons, please!

In Lesson 20 and higher, there should be a little more recall from the early lessons.

Comments about Hungarian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I used the program before a recent academic conference in Sarospatak. In traveling around the country, and even sometimes in Budapest, basic survival Czech is useful. As with all of the level-one Pimsleur courses, you'll get what you need to be polite and find out what you need to know in an efficient, effective, easy-to-use format.

Comments about Hungarian Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I've tried to learn Hungarian informally for more than fifteen years, motivated by bi-annual visits to Hungary to visit my in-laws. Because they speak English well, my only opportunity to practice has been with shopkeepers, ticket sellers, and the like. I wasn't making any progress until I bought Pimsleur Hungarian 1-30. I'm now comfortable with these short, impersonal conversations.

What made the difference is the way the Pimsleur method introduces the elements of the language in the way it's actually used. Things that textbook methods leave until the end of the book are introduced into the Pimsleur dialogues early on, not treated exhaustively, but are presented as a natural part of Hungarian as it is spoken. I stumbled for years over the way Hungarians express possession, a complex of usage that is very unintuitive for English speakers; after the Pimsleur lessons, I'm quite comfortable with it.

My only complaint is that there aren't more advanced lessons. I would eagerly buy Intermediate and Advanced lessons.
