Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction on 16 CDs, plus a reading booklet

Hebrew, a Semitic language, is the official language of Israel. It was once considered a dead language with no native speakers, although it remained in use for liturgical purposes. Hebrew was revived as a spoken language in the mid 19th century and today is spoken by over 5 million in Israel.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Hebrew I, Comprehensive includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with nearnative pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
  • In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 to provide you with an introduction to reading the Hebrew alphabet. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

I've just finished Phase I and am going to continue with Phase II. I have an mp3 version, and use it mostly while driving or walking my dog, so the time spent on it is minimal.

It's a wonderful program that appears to meet all the promises made in the marketin description. Of course, it remains to be seen whether the Hebrew knowledge acquired this way will work in actual situations. Also, I am a bit concerned about ways of expanding the acquired skills post-Pimsleur.

I have a degree (hardly ever used) in teaching foreign languages and knew about the Pimsleur method in theory. Now, having applied it myself, I have proof that it works quite well.

I am in unit 10 phase I. I like the repition of the words learned from the previous unit. What I do not like is the rapid speed in which the male speaker in the lesson speaks. I have to backup and listen 4 to 6 times, he keeps speaking so fast I do not understand sometimes I just go on. He could do this in the later courses but not the first. If he would have spoken slowly and distinctly I would have given the course a high rating. You cannot learn a language very well when the person speaking talks like a machine gun, and you cannot discern the words. If the male speaks that fast in the second phase, I may not buy the next phase.

Comments about Hebrew Phase 1, Units 1-30:

A wonderful way to learn the language and sound like a native. Although you feel at the end of each lesson you will no be able to remember what you learned somehow the method gets those vocabulary words in your mind.

    Service and delivery comments:

As the lessons get more intense the amount of recall on a given word needs to stay the same as in the beginning

Comments about Hebrew Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Because I am someone who can engage the language center of my brain at the same time as the motor function, I am able to do this program while in the car, walking around campus, doing dishes, etc. This makes it so much easier to learn a language as I don't have to set time aside every day to do only that. I recommend this product to all my friends who can do the same or don't mind sitting for half an hour to participate in a lesson.

Comments about Hebrew Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I have found this approach to be very productive and am gaining a rudimentary level of conversation Hebrew faster than I have with other programs. I had doubts on the audio only approach, but the recommended 30 minutes a day is ideal and I find myself thinking things in Hebrew frequently. I love the iPhone app as I can do my 30 minutes during my daily walks or while I'm waiting on something while out.

Comments about Hebrew Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Very useful in learning to speak Hebrew. Two important things are provided:
      1) Hearing the words as spoken by a native speaker.
      2) Hearing the words in the context of a sentence.

This course focuses on hearing and speaking skills but it is lacking in reading and writing skills. If you are only interested in understanding and speaking but not in reading/writing then this course excellent.
