Description
Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction (16 hours) as MP3 download, plus PDF user's guide and reading booklet
German is the official language of Germany and Austria and is one of the official languages of Switzerland, Belgium, Lichtenstein, and Luxembourg. Nearly 100 million people speak German as their first language: about 77 million in Germany, 8 million in Austria, and 4.5 million in Switzerland.
The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! German Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.- In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with nearnative pronunciation skills.
- In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.
- In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.
Reading Lessons begin in Unit 10 and provide you with an introduction to reading German. These readings, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

We are learning a lot faster than we though we would There are some things that I think I would do different. but then I don't have the knowledge of how a person learns. I think I would like to see the words more and have their translation explained more.I would like some Dick and Jane Books. But like I said what do I know about teaching a Language. we are learning good and fast Thanks

I am currently on lesson 15 of 30, really enjoy the way the system works. I like that I can do it in my car. Took German in high school and I feel like I am better at actually speaking and understanding than I ever was in high school. The course is great.

Comments about German Phase 1, Units 1-30:
I have finished Pimsleur German Level 1. It has provided a good foundation for German Level 2 which I just recently received. I do wish there was a review CD at the end of the course that incorporated the most important elements from each of the 30 lessons. It would be a great refresher and reinforcement without having to listen to all 30 lessons over again. On the negative I do not believe Pimusleur is being honest with their advertising when the headline says- Learn to speak German in 10 days. It is impossible! It should say start to learn in 10 days.

Comments about German Phase 1, Units 1-30:
I do the daily lesson in a quiet location. The process seems to work for me. I have the confidence to move on. If I don't feel good about my performance I re-do the lesson the next day. I always wanted to learn more German since I first had it in high school. My goal is to be able to visit Germany and be able to jump in with more than very basic language skills.
I was on the fence about different language programs. I decided on Pimsleur because I didn't want to rely on a computer. I wanted time away from the computer so I could concentrate or what I was working on without being distracted by other things. I like the ease of portability too. I can listen when I am out on my walk as a review. The computer method is much to constraining.
The native speakers are very good. Male and female. I am to the point will I will be doing the reading lessons. The goal being that the reading and the vocabulary will be on the same level when the entire unit is completed. I plan on finishing the entire program within a year. I don't really have any negative to say. Perhaps it could be a bit more economical and move a little slower when all the componets come together. I found in lesson 9 I had to pause the program so I could gather all the thoughts in my head because more complex sentences were being formed and the order matters. This Pimsleur method is more familar to me as it is similar as to what I used in high school. For me a computer program with just muddy things up because multitasking is involved.

Comments about German Phase 1, Units 1-30:
I taught French and German at Junior High level for 30 years.
When I decided to take up Italian I found Pimsleur. I am hooked.
For my money, it's the only method I would ever use again.
I am now offering a class in beginning German to adults. I am
Using Pimsleurs recorded lessons as a basis for everything we do.
They like it and so do I.
In later lessons I would like to see more reading practice; anecdotes, jokes or cartoon features for example.
