      Comments about French Phases 1-2:

First of all: Pimsleur lessons do a stunning job of teaching pronunciation, explaining meaning, dosing it out in do-able portions, and reviewing the complicated and important things.

It helps you become fluent in what I'd call "sentence portions" (as opposed to individual words) and to rearrange these portions to get fundamental sentences and meanings. It focuses on hard issues for us native english speakers, such as pronunciations, and explains usage in terms of cultural norms as well.

Having taught english a bit as a hobby, I was giggling through the entire first lesson or two - just at how fabulously clever it was.

      SPANISH:

I first decided to get Pimsleur because I needed to improve my spanish at work. Pimsleur was a last ditch -and very successful- effort before resorting to traveling to a language school abroad.

While I'd had "halting" beginner type spanish before, Pimsleur helped get me Over The Conversational Hump, to be able to actually have a full conversation with someone in Spanish.

Advice: listen from the first lesson, even if you know almost all of it - you'll probably get a little something clarified that you hadn't had straight before - and the more sound your basics are, the better.

To me, Spanish levels I - III are Indispensable. Level IV was more vocabulary building, and less of what was critical to my getting the language.

      FRENCH:

I got French I & II earlier this year, knowing Nothing of French. Although I think its much more difficult to speak than Spanish, at lesson 16, other French students are already complimenting my accent.

Advice: I listen to each lesson 2 to 4 times, not rushing myself. Sometimes I listen to a few lessons in a row, then go back and review those consecutively - so as not to listen to the same 30 minutes repeatedly. When it seems very hard, I just listen anyway and don't stress about it. By listening to it a few times over, I can't help but to understand and "get" it. I get about 90% or better before moving on, which works for me.

I totally recommend Pimsleur as a first step to the language (or a 2nd or 3rd step...) I am also supplementing Pimsleur French with another (online) French course which emphasizes listening, grammar and basic expressions. The two together are amazing (if you have the time). Between the two, I recommend doing Pimsleur FIRST.

I've enjoyed Pimsleur so much that I've been wanting to write this review for awhile. Hope you enjoy it too!

        Comments about French Phases 1-2:

I'd never heard of Pimsleur until a flashy Facebook ad caught my attention one night, advertising that I could learn to speak a foreign language in 30 days, for $10. I was skeptical but interested enough to give it a try. I was delighted from the very first lesson! I then tried ordering directly through Pimsleur.com so that I could easily download the lessons into my phone. I do the lessons while I walk the dog, drive my car, and when I have down time during business trips. At the completion of Phase 4, I intend to reward myself with a trip to France! I'm a big fan of Pimsleur!

          Comments about French Phases 1-2:

My pronunciation is so much more accurate with this instruction than others. I love the pace of building success and I am not frustrated. I actually look forward to the daily session as opposed to dreading it which has happened for me in learning a new language in the past.

          Comments about French I-II:

I listen to CDs every day on the way to work. They are very helpful and I like how they repeat sentences from previous lessons. I like the English speaker explaining the "rules". I do have difficulty understandin gthe directions of the French Speaker, but I guess that is a part of learning.
