Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction (16 hours) as MP3 download, plus PDF user's guide and reading booklet

French is an official language in 44 countries. It is spoken by 55 million people in France, 3 million in Belgium, 1.5 million in Switzerland, 6.5 million in Canada, and 5 million in former French + Belgian colonies. It is also an official language of the U.N.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! French Phase 1, Lessons 1-30 includes 15 hours of spoken language practice and one hour of reading instruction in thirty, 30-minute lessons.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with nearnative pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident. In the final 10 lessons of Phase 1, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level.
  • In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons begin in Unit 9 and provide you with an introduction to reading French. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

To whom it may concern:

I wanted to write to you and say thank you for the excellent language programs that you provide. I was considered unable to learn a language in High school and struggled with Spanish in college. I first tried your 10 day French program 6 years ago and I still have retained the conversations learned there in. About a month and a half ago I went overseas for the first time to Italy and was very nervous about not knowing the language. I had one month to learn Italian and since I was so confident with the French that I learned from your compnay, I decided to try your Italian program. I was blown away at how easy it was to learn a new language and retain it along with my French. Not only was I was able to understand conversation I was able to speak it and be understood by all the people I came in contact with in Rome. I was able to help my family find directions to places we wanted to go and I was able to order food and drink with ease and by the end of my week there I felt very comfortable with the language so much so that several cab driver mistook me as a local. The French also came in handy when I got lost and I went to ask for directions and I was able to get directions from a French tourist.
The Pimsleurworks and I highly recommend it to anyone who is wanting to learn a language and be able to converse in it. I never dreamed that I would be able to speak another language and you have proved that I can! Thank you for this amazing experience and for helping me communicate and become connected with the world around me. I highly recommend Pimsleur languages because it works and it works very well. Have a wonderful day.

Sincerely,

Brandon A. McCluskey

This product is very efficient in that it audibly speaks exactly how the words and phrases are to be pronounced, and requires you to speak back. The way it takes you through a process of firstly speaking formally to natives about things related to travel and foreign matters is a necessary process. The graduated interval recall is very reassuring and beneficial, as I think, "I DEFinitely know this one!" and it fires up my confidence.
A couple things that didn't work personally for ME: I am definitely more of a visual and tangible learner. I often have trouble with hearing foreign things and remembering them. Visual aids such as pictures, the actual words and spellings, and other acquaintances aid in the ingraining of the material in my mind. Secondly, this is a foreign language. At times I feel like the speakers are flying by with words and phrases I'm supposed to know. It irks me that I can't see the spelling of the word, or even that the speakers don't slow down to "stupid people" level speaking. I was drastically needing readings and spellings of the words I'd had thrown at me. Even the method is largely based on "speaking like a native" and avoids displaying words, I think it should at least show translations starting at lesson 10. I've heard several times that memory is ingrained far more with more senses stimulated (feeling, hearing, seeing, smelling[?]), and I believe it could make such a difference with memorizing words.
In a nutshell, this product works for me, and maybe more so for other audio learners. But I think the product could work drastically more if spellings or pictures were introduced later on in the lessons.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I needed to revive the french I studied in college in the 60s and I didn't have much time. This was not my first Pimsleur course so I already knew the drill and how best to use the product (several sessions per day, going forward and then backward when necessary). Smooth, efficient, fun.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

First let me say that I started with a product from another Company. I completed the first level and was very disappointed with the product. After four months, while I could repeat words I could not carry on a very simple sentence. although I found the voice recognition system that is part of the software very good. With Pimsleur everyday I can speak more and more in conversation mode.

Now I have enjoyed PIMSLEUR French and feel it is a terrific approach to learning a new language. I lived in Japan for two years and basically learned Japanese the same way (for real not from recordings),I further feel Pimsleur is the natural way to do it.

The progression is good going from simple to more complex, however, if you could fit in to the time requirements a few more repeat sequences for each new and review statement would be helpful.

If it had a reading (stories etc.) and writing component after the conversational component would be perfect. I did notice that you have that in another product, however that product only has three levels at this time.

Overall I feel this is the best method available to learn a new language, quickly, easily and enjoyably.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I found the Pimsleur French lessons extremely effective. I used the Android app on my phone for the lessons. Since French phonetics depend on adjacent words, I used the Pimsleur app alongside Google Translate, which dramatically helped me understand word and sound patterns. Like anything else, you'll need to focus as you're learning, but the lessons are paced well. I've really enjoyed learning French and will buy the next series of lessons.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I am about half way through units 1-30. In fact 14 is challenging me right now. I have found that more and more of the conversational French is sticking with me and comes back unbidden, en Francois, rather than via translation from English to French. I've even begun to have occasional dreams in French--kinda weird, but proves that the acquisition process has begun.

The proof will really come next summer in the southern Rhone when I take my wife to taste some Rhone Reds.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

My daughter had taken a year of French in 9th grade. This year she is homeschooling, & wanted to continue learning French. While waiting for the package from school to arrive, I downloaded the pimsleur French course, which we have now decided to use instead of the cd's sent by the school that are from another French learning program. The Pimsleur method has been so easy to jump right into and really start speaking the language instead of starting with the alphabet, days of the week, etc. My son has started Spanish this year and I'm about to purchase the Pimsleur program for him.
