With this product you start from zero, learning first survival phrases and vocabulary, and eventually progressing to a highintermediate level of speaking, understanding, and reading the French language. Every lesson contains an introductory conversation and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice of all vocabulary introduced. The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension, and on learning to speak French. Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 for each Level. These lessons, which total about three hours, are designed to first give you practice sounding out the French alphabet, then to progress to reading for meaning. They also provide extensive additional vocabulary. Before you know it, you’ll be reading French with the ease and flexibility of a native speaker. A PDF file containing the combined Reading Booklets to be used with the audio lessons is included. I came across Pimsleur by accident but was inticed by their introductory offer. I already spoke some French, so when I ordered, I started with Phase 2 and it was the right place. It reminded me of things I already knew, but stressed me enough to keep it interesting. I have a 30-45 minute commute to and from work, so I listen to the day's lesson twice. Even with traffic, it's easy to stay focused. It's definitely a good way to learn, especially if you're 60-90 days from a trip overseas.

The first time I visited Paris, I went with absolutely no knowledge of the language. I quickly realized that "getting by" in English is not very easy there; so, I started the Pimsleur program about 7 months before my next trip to Paris. I took each lesson twice before moving on and was very disciplined about never missing a day doing a lesson. I also read through a grammar book just to see the rules explained but did not memorize extra vocabulary.
I can't say enough about the difference in visiting Paris knowing some French. I felt completely comfortable in most situations. The vocabulary and sentence building patterns taught in Pimsleur were perfect and covered every situation I found myself in. My wife and kids were very impressed. Overall, I was very happy with the program and have recommended it to many others as well.

Overall, a great product if you are focused on learning via audio only. It is a problem for those who are more visual or who learn in different ways than just learning. I think the timing of the lessons and the opportunities to respond are done quite well, especially if you practice everyday. Again, reading and writing suffer, because you don't practice it as much as conversation. However, my oral skills I noticed are not relying on my pausing and reciting the answer. Rather, I find myself just responding as a reflex instead of a conscious skill.

I use the program on MP3 each day on my long drive to and from work. It allows you to learn French without feeling like it is a chore. You don't realize how much you're learning. I am on the second phase of the four. If the program maintains this pace, I feel confident that i will be speaking fluently when I have completed all four.
