Description
Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction on 16 CDs, plus a reading booklet
French is an official language in 44 countries. It is spoken by 55 million people in France, 3 million in Belgium, 1.5 million in Switzerland, 6.5 million in Canada, and 5 million in former French + Belgian colonies. It is also an official language of the U.N.
Comprehensive French I includes 30 lessons of essential grammar and vocabulary -- 16 hours of real-life spoken practice sessions -- plus an introduction to reading. Upon completion of this program, you will have functional spoken proficiency with the most-frequently-used vocabulary and grammatical structures.
- In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with nearnative pronunciation skills.
- In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident. In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level.
- In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.
Reading Lessons begin in Unit 9 and provide you with an introduction to reading French. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:
I listen to the lessons while I ride the stationary bike. They fit into my 1/2 hour workout, and together, the two activities provide the daily motivation I need. The pace of the lessons is good. There is enough repetition to gain mastery. I would like to have a printed reference sheet along with the audio lessons, though. Sometimes it is hard to make out a word or phrase, and I've had to look things up online.

I've used Pimsleur twice now to prepare for trips. I use the audio on my phone and in my car. I realy love it and think it is a fabulous program. I do supplement my study with a separate writing and review program, because I feel like I personally need it.

I listen at least five times each lesson; it takes three to ten days depending on my time. You should recommend that, because sound or pronunciation or understanding is different in very person.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:
I used the French 1 course to prepare for a trip to France. I was able to understand the french dialogues during the course and work on my french speaking and listening skills. Within a month, I am confident that I will have the language skills to support my communications in France. I was not confident of my secondary language skills following language courses in high school and college. I took French courses in high school and could speak and understand very little. I took a 3 year spanish course in college. At the end of three years, I could not understand someone speaking in spanish and I could only speak a few words. However, I was comfortable in reading and writing in spanish.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:
Well, I love Pimsleur. I loved Vol 1-3 of German, and so far I'm loving Vol 1 of French. I'm consistentely doing one lesson a day, which takes about 30 minutes, and I have to say this is probably my favorite time of the day. Of course, doing this course is a serious time committment of months and months, BUT that's what it takes to learn a language, so it's great and I highly recommend it.
