Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction on 16 CDs, plus a reading booklet

French is an official language in 44 countries. It is spoken by 55 million people in France, 3 million in Belgium, 1.5 million in Switzerland, 6.5 million in Canada, and 5 million in former French + Belgian colonies. It is also an official language of the U.N.

Comprehensive French I includes 30 lessons of essential grammar and vocabulary -- 16 hours of real-life spoken practice sessions -- plus an introduction to reading. Upon completion of this program, you will have functional spoken proficiency with the most-frequently-used vocabulary and grammatical structures.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with nearnative pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident. In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level.
  • In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons begin in Unit 9 and provide you with an introduction to reading French. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

To whom it may concern:

I wanted to write to you and say thank you for the excellent language programs that you provide. I was considered unable to learn a language in High school and struggled with Spanish in college. I first tried your 10 day French program 6 years ago and I still have retained the conversations learned there in. About a month and a half ago I went overseas for the first time to Italy and was very nervous about not knowing the language. I had one month to learn Italian and since I was so confident with the French that I learned from your compnay, I decided to try your Italian program. I was blown away at how easy it was to learn a new language and retain it along with my French. Not only was I was able to understand conversation I was able to speak it and be understood by all the people I came in contact with in Rome. I was able to help my family find directions to places we wanted to go and I was able to order food and drink with ease and by the end of my week there I felt very comfortable with the language so much so that several cab driver mistook me as a local. The French also came in handy when I got lost and I went to ask for directions and I was able to get directions from a French tourist.
The Pimsleurworks and I highly recommend it to anyone who is wanting to learn a language and be able to converse in it. I never dreamed that I would be able to speak another language and you have proved that I can! Thank you for this amazing experience and for helping me communicate and become connected with the world around me. I highly recommend Pimsleur languages because it works and it works very well. Have a wonderful day.

Sincerely,

Brandon A. McCluskey

This product is very efficient in that it audibly speaks exactly how the words and phrases are to be pronounced, and requires you to speak back. The way it takes you through a process of firstly speaking formally to natives about things related to travel and foreign matters is a necessary process. The graduated interval recall is very reassuring and beneficial, as I think, "I DEFinitely know this one!" and it fires up my confidence.
A couple things that didn't work personally for ME: I am definitely more of a visual and tangible learner. I often have trouble with hearing foreign things and remembering them. Visual aids such as pictures, the actual words and spellings, and other acquaintances aid in the ingraining of the material in my mind. Secondly, this is a foreign language. At times I feel like the speakers are flying by with words and phrases I'm supposed to know. It irks me that I can't see the spelling of the word, or even that the speakers don't slow down to "stupid people" level speaking. I was drastically needing readings and spellings of the words I'd had thrown at me. Even the method is largely based on "speaking like a native" and avoids displaying words, I think it should at least show translations starting at lesson 10. I've heard several times that memory is ingrained far more with more senses stimulated (feeling, hearing, seeing, smelling[?]), and I believe it could make such a difference with memorizing words.
In a nutshell, this product works for me, and maybe more so for other audio learners. But I think the product could work drastically more if spellings or pictures were introduced later on in the lessons.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I bought the Pimsleur French course, Level 1, for one reason: pronounciation. I was awful at it. I'm nearly at the end of the first 30 lessons, and I'm really happy with my progress.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I'm going to Paris for the first time in October, but I've been to other areas of France before and found the language barrier to be more of a hurdle than Italy or Spain, where my old high school Spanish and college Italian at least allowed me to understand some basics. I like the Pimsleur program. It's fun and interesting, but it remains to be seen how helpful it will be when I'm thrown into the actual scnenario of having to communicate. I was glad when the reading lessons started at lesson 11 because I felt a little insecure just learning phonetically, but spellings are so different from the sounds that it's probably just as well. I do every lesson 2-4 times until I feel pretty comfortable with it before moving on.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

The audio MP3 files provide a great method of learning a foreign language at your own pace. I listen to a lesson each morning as I commute to work, and it helps me feel productive before I even step foot in the office.

The reassuring repetition of new phrases and well-timed re-introduction of familiar vocabulary has helped me develop a working proficiency in a new language. By speaking out loud, I can train my mouth to form sounds quite similar to those a native in a given foreign language would make.

The reading exercises, while short and somewhat lacking of the product's useful instant review, still help me map sounds I have learned to the text they form on a page. Learners will also find that they need to be very diligent to avoid having their newfound knowledge of a foreign language fade away.

Overall, though, I am very impressed with this product's organization and learning style. I have become comfortable with a new language in a matter of weeks and am excited to see where my learning takes me next.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I try to listen to the tapes every morning with my morning coffee. I also downloaded them to my phone so I can listen to them in the car on short trips around town. I've never learned a language so have to go thru each tape 2-3 times before I feel I'm ready for the next. I'm a visual learner also, so wish I had a vocabulary list with the words written. Sometimes I"m not sure of the pronunciation.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I already used this product to brush up on my Italian, and they were great. For French, I was a total newbie and sceptical. I watched a Youtube where some gal explained why Pimsleur was better than Rosetta Stone and she nailed it! I loaded the lessons on my laptop AND phone, and loved being able to do the lessons while driving, on the airplane, train, etc.
