Description

Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction on 16 CDs, plus a reading booklet

French is an official language in 44 countries. It is spoken by 55 million people in France, 3 million in Belgium, 1.5 million in Switzerland, 6.5 million in Canada, and 5 million in former French + Belgian colonies. It is also an official language of the U.N.

Comprehensive French I includes 30 lessons of essential grammar and vocabulary -- 16 hours of real-life spoken practice sessions -- plus an introduction to reading. Upon completion of this program, you will have functional spoken proficiency with the most-frequently-used vocabulary and grammatical structures.

  • In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with nearnative pronunciation skills.
  • In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident. In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level.
  • In this phase, more directions are given in the target language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

Reading Lessons begin in Unit 9 and provide you with an introduction to reading French. These lessons, which total about one hour, are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

To whom it may concern:

I wanted to write to you and say thank you for the excellent language programs that you provide. I was considered unable to learn a language in High school and struggled with Spanish in college. I first tried your 10 day French program 6 years ago and I still have retained the conversations learned there in. About a month and a half ago I went overseas for the first time to Italy and was very nervous about not knowing the language. I had one month to learn Italian and since I was so confident with the French that I learned from your compnay, I decided to try your Italian program. I was blown away at how easy it was to learn a new language and retain it along with my French. Not only was I was able to understand conversation I was able to speak it and be understood by all the people I came in contact with in Rome. I was able to help my family find directions to places we wanted to go and I was able to order food and drink with ease and by the end of my week there I felt very comfortable with the language so much so that several cab driver mistook me as a local. The French also came in handy when I got lost and I went to ask for directions and I was able to get directions from a French tourist.
The Pimsleurworks and I highly recommend it to anyone who is wanting to learn a language and be able to converse in it. I never dreamed that I would be able to speak another language and you have proved that I can! Thank you for this amazing experience and for helping me communicate and become connected with the world around me. I highly recommend Pimsleur languages because it works and it works very well. Have a wonderful day.

Sincerely,

Brandon A. McCluskey

This product is very efficient in that it audibly speaks exactly how the words and phrases are to be pronounced, and requires you to speak back. The way it takes you through a process of firstly speaking formally to natives about things related to travel and foreign matters is a necessary process. The graduated interval recall is very reassuring and beneficial, as I think, "I DEFinitely know this one!" and it fires up my confidence.
A couple things that didn't work personally for ME: I am definitely more of a visual and tangible learner. I often have trouble with hearing foreign things and remembering them. Visual aids such as pictures, the actual words and spellings, and other acquaintances aid in the ingraining of the material in my mind. Secondly, this is a foreign language. At times I feel like the speakers are flying by with words and phrases I'm supposed to know. It irks me that I can't see the spelling of the word, or even that the speakers don't slow down to "stupid people" level speaking. I was drastically needing readings and spellings of the words I'd had thrown at me. Even the method is largely based on "speaking like a native" and avoids displaying words, I think it should at least show translations starting at lesson 10. I've heard several times that memory is ingrained far more with more senses stimulated (feeling, hearing, seeing, smelling[?]), and I believe it could make such a difference with memorizing words.
In a nutshell, this product works for me, and maybe more so for other audio learners. But I think the product could work drastically more if spellings or pictures were introduced later on in the lessons.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

Getting ready for a trip to Montreal. I had three years of French in high school many years ago so this is a great way to refresh my memory and learn enough French to get by on vacation. I listen to it in my car so it is very easy to use and it really sinks in. I believe after 30 lessons, I will be prepared to speak French on vacation.

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I have successfully studied several languages using the Pimsleur resources. They are very good. I use the program daily. Throughout the time, there is continual review of things learned before so they aren't forgotten. The key to learning a language is saying it out loud over and over, and Pimsleur provides that, using prompts. Pimsleur can be counted on to give you a solid foundation. All around excellent product!

My mother teaches languages (German and Spanish) and she recommended Pimsleur when I mentioned I should learn some French for work. I will hopefully visit my new co-workers soon; Pimsleur will help me learn the basics in just one month!

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I had a trip to France coming up and did not want to just trust that my high school French from 20 years earlier would "come back to me once I was there." I purchased the first 30 lessons of French and was surprised how easily it did come back to me and how simple the Pimsleur method was to use and do. I listened to the lessons in the car, walking the dogs, while I cooked dinner. I had heard a rumor that French people can be potentially be rude if you don't try to speak their language, and these lessons really gave me confidence to order food, ask for things, talk to cab drivers and shop keepers. Every local I came into contact with was extremely nice, friendly and helpful and I know that is completely due to the Pimsleur method giving me the confidence to speak French phrases easily! Many waiters and shop keepers even complimented me on my French! This method is unlike any language you've taken before, where you're taking courses for months and still have trouble putting sentences together in a timely manner. Within the first few days, you've already got the skills and confidence to ask for things and answer questions. I'm a believer in the Pimsleur method!

Comments about French Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I used this as directed, a new lesson every day and sometimes repeating the same lesson if I felt it necessary. The learning went very smoothly. Especially helpful were the small repetitions from the previous lessons that were interjected into the next lessons. This was a very good refresher to my high school French language courses taken more than 50 years ago. I found myself remembering sentence structure and idioms well. I wish more of the vocabulary showed up in the reading lessons. It took me until French 2 to learn the word for "older" as in older son... That is the only suggestion I would make.
