Comments about Finnish, Comprehensive:

I like the 30 minute format. That suits my commute perfectly and breaks it down into digestible chunks. HOWEVER, speaking is only half the job, you must know how the words are spelled in order to understand the language more completely. People OTHER than tourists use these language programs. We need to know business Finnish, not just restaurant Finnish. (Telephone Finnish too). And throwing in the word "regretably" in the first few lessons? Come on, that is too much of a distraction from fundamentals.

Comments about Finnish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I found Phase I to be a fantastic starting point for learning Finnish. I often travel to Finland and have many Finnish friends, and while their grasp of the English language is excellent, I think it is important for me to be able to communicate with them in their own language.
Unfortunately with only Phase I available, I am very limited on advancing my knowledge. Pimsleur is my go to method for learning languages and I feel it would be most advantageous to stick with Pimsleur in my Finnish studies. PLEASE release a Phase II :-)

Comments about Finnish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

I choose to do each of the lessons 2-4 times and reinforce the learning in my car when I am able. I think the repetition is key and since I grew up hearing Finnish and have been to Finland several times, I know the pronunciation is excellent.

After I have done a lesson at least once, I take the time to write down the phrases in English to practice later.

I am looking forward to traveling to Finland again with the confidence to speak the language.

I am only a third of the way through and am eager to see what I have accomplished at the end. However, I am worried that I will not be able to continue! Please add more lessons!

Service and delivery comments:

Some written explanation of the grammar to supplement the lessons would be helpful. I want to know the "why" and "how."

It would be really helpful to include written English prompts of what was learned in each lesson. For example, a list of phrases used in Unit 8 would include, "I would like something to eat in the cafeteria."

Comments about Finnish Phase 1, Units 1-30:

This product was simply amazing! The whole program is well thought out, with native speakers repeating every phrase clearly. I could tell from the sample lesson that this course was going to deliver. You learn phrases in a conversational context, but then you are forced to work from what you have learned to make slightly different phrases. For example, you might learn to say "I don't speak Finnish", later learn the word for "English" and then build on the previous phrase by being asked to say "I speak English, I don't speak Finnish". This type of logic is carried on throughout the course, into topics such as numbers, counting, and directions.

At the end of the 30 lessons (which took me about 40 days), I had amassed a surprising amount of very functional vocabulary in Finnish, and was even catching parts of Finnish pop songs and reading SOME headlines. Of course, Pimsleur is not magic and cannot defy the limitations of the human brain, but it is scientifically sound and well thought out, allowing for a complete beginner to learn enough to get started on a longer course of study in just over a month. I would estimate that I learned the equivalent of a semester's worth of material as commonly taught in U.S. universities.

The complaint, as pointed out by other reviewers, is that they only offer Phase 1, which makes for a strong start, but lacks the depth and time to continue pursuing this beautiful language. In some ways, the course has been a gift and a curse: I am now spoiled to the point where conventional textbooks are too boring, but I still don't have the capacity for more "immersion" techniques. I do hope that a Phase II is forth coming! (Indeed, I was encouraged to review the product as a way of incentivizing Pimsleur to release the next unit). It seems clear enough that Pimsleur does not make much money off the less-commonly-studied languages, and so only releases the first phase; however, I have personally been hesitant to purchase more such products, knowing that I will be left hanging with a strong foundation, but limited options to move forward. It seems to me that making a commitment to offering products for less-commonly-taught languages would help Pimsleur corner that market....
