About the Finnish Language

  • Finnish belongs to the Finnic branch of the Finno-Ugric family of languages.
  • Its closest relative is Estonian; Hungarian is a distant cousin.
  • It is spoken by approximately 5.2 million people, mostly in Finland, and by some in Sweden and Russia as well.
  • There are three varieties of standard Finnish which are spoken throughout the country:
    • kirjakieli ("book language") - used in official documents, official speeches and the daily news,
    • yleiskieli - the standard language used in schools; it is formal and correct, though more relaxed than the "book language," and
    • puhekieli ("spoken language") - more casual variety used in everyday conversation, which changes frequently.

This course teaches the standard Finnish language, yleiskieli.

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You’ll be speaking and understanding in no time flat! Each lesson of Finnish Phase 1, Unit 01-05 provides 30 minutes of spoken language practice, with an introductory conversation, and new vocabulary and structures. Detailed instructions enable you to understand and participate in the conversation. Each lesson contains practice for vocabulary introduced in previous lessons. The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension, and on learning to speak Finnish.

Comments about Finnish Phase 1, Unit 01-05:

Prior to a meeting with Finnish colleagues, I took Lessons 1-5. Although our meetings were conducted in English, I was able to exchange some small talk with my new colleagues and understand some of what they were saying. One of them said: "I have never seen anyone learn Finnish so quickly." To acquire conversational fluency, this method seems perfect. I imagine I'll have to study from a book as well if I'm to become literate in Finnish.

Comments about Finnish Phase 1, Unit 01-05:

I studied the first ten lessons prior to my trip to Finland and was able to communicate in Finnish in a number of situations. My Finnish friends were quite impressed. My only problem with this course is that Pimsleur does not have the next level of Finnish so if I want to continue my studies of this language (which I do) I will have to find another course/book.

Comments about Finnish Phase 1, Unit 01-05:

I used pimsleur to learn english and I'm using it to learn finnish, i see that it is an efficace method, my suggestion is to decide develop it from french language to all of 50 language., because you know that there is many nations use the french as a 2nd language.
I can say the method is great.

I use this when driving to and from work. I like that it goes over things many times. Needs to explain the conjigation of verbs more.
