About the Finnish Language

  • Finnish belongs to the Finnic branch of the Finno-Ugric family of languages.
  • Its closest relative is Estonian; Hungarian is a distant cousin.
  • It is spoken by approximately 5.2 million people, mostly in Finland, and by some in Sweden and Russia as well.
  • There are three varieties of standard Finnish which are spoken throughout the country:
    • kirjakieli ("book language") - used in official documents, official speeches and the daily news,
    • yleiskieli - the standard language used in schools; it is formal and correct, though more relaxed than the "book language," and
    • puhekieli ("spoken language") - more casual variety used in everyday conversation, which changes frequently.

This course teaches the standard Finnish language, yleiskieli.

Pimsleur's Conversational Finnish Program
  • Sixteen 30-minute lessons of spoken Finnish language learning (the first sixteen Units of Pimsleur's 30-Unit Finnish Comprehensive Program).
  • Essential grammar and vocabulary that teach you greetings, numbers, how to order food and drink, deal with currency, scheduling a meal or meeting and to give and ask for directions. Learn to speak with near-native pronunciation skills.

  • Reading Lessons begin in Unit 11 and provide you with an introduction to reading Finnish. These lessons are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. In addition, combined Reading Lessons from all the units are included at the end. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.
  • No mindless repetition! Converse with native speakers in natural (and useful!) conversations.
  • Easy, fast, fun and effective language acquisition.
  • No computer necessary! Unlike expensive software programs which tie learners to a computer, Pimsleur courses are available in CD or mp3 format to meet your needs.
  • Receive an instant credit of $150 to trade up from the Conversational to the full Level 1 Comprehensive CD course.

    Comments about Finnish, Conversational:

We're going to Helsinki next month and need to know just a bit of Finnish so we can not be boorish Americans while there. These CDs are perfect for use in the car. I'm amazed by how easy the speakers make it, by breaking down the words into sections and perfecting the pronunciation from the end of the word to the beginning. Backwards! Who knew?
A funny thing is, the first scenario presented on the CD is an American man who wants to talk to a Finnish woman in a cafe. I guess the primary target for these CDs is businessmen abroad.

      Comments about Finnish, Conversational:

I'm going to Finland in 2 months and wanted a language program that would provide fast results. Pimsleur fit the bill.

The idea of not using a study guide was at first terrifying. It was like being thrown into the deep end and told to start swimming for the very first time.

As it turned out, I really did learn faster that way. I was able to retain so much more than I thought I would.

I highly recommend the Pimsleur method.
