Description
Includes 10 lessons and reading instruction (5 hours) as MP3 download, plus PDF user's guide and reading booklet
Portuguese is the mother tongue of about 170 million people, mainly in Portugal and the Portuguese islands in the Atlantic, Brazil, and Portugal's former overseas provinces in Africa and Asia. Pimsleur's European Portuguese teaches the Lisbon dialect of European Portuguese.
European Portuguese Phase 1, Units 1-10 provide an introduction to European Portuguese with 10 thirty-minute lessons . With this product you start from zero, learning first survival phrases and vocabulary, then progressing to speaking and understanding at a functional level. Every lesson contains an introductory conversation, and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice for all vocabulary introduced. Emphasis on pronunciation and comprehension. At the completion of this course, you’ll have a basic vocabulary and speak with a near-native accent. This course provides you with a solid foundation upon which to expand your language skills. Reading Lessons begin in Unit 2 and provide you with an introduction to reading Portuguese. These lessons are designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. In addition, combined Reading Lessons from all the units are included at the end. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.
Pimsleur® equals success. Just one 30-minute lesson a day gets you speaking and understanding like no other program.

Comments about Port (Euro) Phase 1, Units 1-10:
I already speak/read Spanish fairly well and wanted to learn some basic European Portuguese in case I cross the border during my trips to Spain, especially pronunciation. The Pimsleur course is effective at getting down the basics, even though it was only 10 units long. I probably would have been better off with a slightly different course for this particular language, given how I already speak Spanish. In particular, a course which simply reads sentences and then has me read them back, since going from the written Portuguese language to the sounds is where I am weakest. I was already able to silently read Portuguese fluently before this course, given how similar it is to Spanish.
I learned French and Spanish in school and used the Pimsleur courses to get myself past basic Greek and Italian (and then improved in those languages by reading books). I can highly recommend Pimsleur courses as the only really effective way for beginners to get going in a language. Learning the basics from a human is tedious for everyone concerned, since so much repitition is involved. Once you get past the basics, then learning from a human instructors becomes more possible. Or you can learn from books once you get the basics of the pronunciation down, which is where the Pimsleur courses excel.

Comments about Port (Euro) Phase 1, Units 1-10:
I was highly disappointed to see that ALL that was available for European Portuguese was the first ten units??? Why is this?? Why does Brazilian get 30 or more and the European not warrant the same level?? It does me VERY little good to not be able to progress past this point. This is why I rated it so low.

Comments about Port (Euro) Phase 1, Units 1-10:
I really like this tool for learning Portuguese, it's so far been really helpful. I even spoke a little Portuguese in my dream one night! I think the Unit reading falls a little short in repetition of certain words or phrases, but the Unit lessons are fairly thorough. As they go on they don't repeat as much so I'll stay on the lesson 2-3 times sometimes till it feels secure. Other than that this product is great.

Comments about Port (Euro) Phase 1, Units 1-10:
I would have appreciated a Phase 2 or at least knowing there wasn't a Phase 2 before I purchased Phase 1. It sees your other languages have an introductory course then a more advanced course.
I used it while on the elliptical machine. It's great for that.
