Description
Includes 30 lessons and reading instruction on 16 CDs, plus a reading booklet
Eastern Arabic is the dialect spoken in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine. Eastern Arabic is also very well understood in the eastern and southeastern parts of the Arab world -- Arabia, the Gulf Region, and Iraq. Pimsleur's Eastern Arabic is based on the dialect of Damascus, Syria.
The Pimsleur® Method is scientifically proven to be your fastest route to nearnative fluency. Eastern Arabic III includes another 15 hours of spoken language practice and one additional hour of reading instruction, and is designed to be used after completion of Levels I and II.- The beginning lessons offer you the chance to expand your vocabulary and increase your fluency to an even higher level. You’ll gain experience participating in many informal and some formal discussions on practical, social, and semiprofessional topics. You’ll skillfully form longer, more complex sentences, and most importantly, you’ll find yourself being understood, even by native speakers unused to dealing with foreigners. You’ll be able to join in conversations effortlessly, confident of being understood.
- In the next 10 lessons your skills will show everincreasing mastery of the language. Speaking with grace and complete naturalness, you’ll enjoy fluid conversations on many new subjects. Delving deeper into cultural norms and situations, you’ll find yourself responding effortlessly, and able to choose from a wide accumulation of vocabulary and structures.
- In the final 10 lessons, you’re nearing fluency with agile responses, and a naturalsounding, nearnative accent. You’re able to utilize the language in subtle ways, and speak using past, present, and future tenses. Selfconfidence soars as you experience the language and culture; no longer as a foreigner, but with a deepening insight into an expanding new world.
Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30. These lessons, which total about one hour, give you practice reading Arabic and provide you with insight into Arab culture with proverbs, common expressions, and a broad look at things you’ll see when visiting an Arabicspeaking country. A Reading Booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Comments about Arabic (East) Phase 3, Units 1-30:
The is a dearth of materials available for learning the Syrian dialect and this course goes far towards helping people bridge the gap between Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and what they are more likely to hear on the street in the Levant. I would strongly recommend it to others who want a solid introduction to Syrian dialect.

Comments about Arabic (East) Phase 3, Units 1-30:
The 3 phases of Eastern Arabic were fun and rewarding to use, and left me able to communicate simple ideas in Arabic. I only have 3 complaints:
1) It teaches you Syrian / Lebanese 'slang' -- my Sudanese in-laws were thoroughly amused by it (they speak their own Arabic 'slang'), but sometimes what I tried to say couldn't get across to them at all. Similarly, I wasn't able to understand them as often as I could have hoped. This isn't a problem if your interest is in speaking with Syrians / Lebanese, of course.
2) There seemed to be discontinuity between the 3 different phases; slightly different vocabulary being used when you switched from Phase 2 to 3, for example. It isn't that big a deal; you can pick up the new style and start learning again pretty easily.
3) I want more! More lessons, more vocabulary, practice in more conversational contexts, etc. It's too fun and easy to stop at 3 phases :)
Otherwise, I am very happy with the product.
