About the Eastern Arabic Language

Eastern Arabic is the dialect spoken in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine. Eastern Arabic is also very well understood in the eastern and southeastern parts of the Arab world -- Arabia, the Gulf Region, and Iraq. Pimsleur’s Eastern Arabic is based on the dialect of Damascus, Syria.

The Pimsleur® Method has worked for millions all over the world. Totally portable; simple to use; Pimsleur works so you don’t have to. This complete Eastern Arabic course includes all of Phases 1, 2 and 3 – 45 hours of spoken language practice and 3 hours of reading instruction. With this product you start from zero, learning first survival phrases and vocabulary, and eventually progressing to a highintermediate level of speaking and understanding Eastern Arabic. Every lesson contains an introductory conversation and isolated vocabulary and structures, as well as full practice of all vocabulary introduced. The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension, and on learning to speak Eastern Arabic. At the completion of this course, you’ll speak confidently using your wideranging vocabulary, and experience the language and culture with a deepening insight into a new world.

Reading Lessons are included at the end of Unit 30 for each Phase. These lessons, which total about three hours, are designed to first give you practice sounding out the Arabic alphabet, then to progress to reading for meaning. They also provide extensive additional vocabulary. Before you know it, you’ll be reading Arabic with the ease and flexibility of a native speaker. A PDF file containing the combined Reading Booklets to be used with the audio lessons is included.

Comments about Arabic (East) Phases 1-3:

The Pimsleur program is a great way to get started speaking and understanding Levantine (Eastern) Arabic. I listened to each thirty-minute lesson at least once, usually in my car on the way to work. I also supplemented the program by listening to as much authentic spoken Arabic as I could (usually Lebanese movies, TV shows, and music).

After finishing all three units, I'm still far from fluent, but I can converse to a certain degree with my wife's family from Palestine and Lebanon. They love it, and they're impressed with how much I learned in just three months of using Pimsleur. They did have to help me with pronunciation a bit, but Arabic is such a different language, that's not a surprise.

The best thing about Pimsleur is that it gets you speaking fast, and I felt the whole time that I was learning a lot of material and learning it quickly. At the end of the program, you will still be a beginner, but with the lack of materials out there for learning Levantine Arabic, I can't imagine a better way to get started. I recommend the program whole-heartedly.

It works very quickly and effectively. If it goes at pace that's too fast, just review the lesson twice, before moving on.

      Comments about Arabic (Eastern) I-III:

The Pimsleur Program is incredibly effective in teaching all the necessities of mastering a language from the repetition, to the intonations and proper pronunciations, to the important words needed for basic conversation; it is exceptional. I have highly recomended it to many people and also will continue to do so with confidence and sincerity.
